Psalm 2

The Messiah’s Reign

Why are nations in tumult,
and countries plotting[a] in vain?[b]
The kings of the earth establish themselves,
and the rulers conspire[c] together
against Yahweh and his anointed:
“Let us tear off their bonds,
and cast their cords from us!”
He who sits enthroned in the heavens laughs.
The Lord derides them.
Then he speaks to them in his wrath,
and in his fury he terrifies them:
“But as for me, I have set my king
on Zion, my holy mountain.”
I will tell the decree;
Yahweh said to me:
“You are my son;
today I have begotten you.
Ask from me and I will make the nations your heritage,
and your possession the ends of the earth.
You will break them with an iron rod.
Like a potter’s vessel you will shatter them.”
10 So then, O kings, be wise.
Be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve Yahweh with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son
lest he be angry and you perish on the way,
for his anger burns quickly.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Jeremiah 18:12-23

12 But they will say, ‘It is hopeless, for we will go after our own plans, and each one of us will act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’

13 “Therefore thus says Yahweh,

‘Please ask among the nations, “Who has heard the like of this?”[a]
The virgin of Israel has done something very horrible.
14 Does the snow of Lebanon leave from the crags[b] of Sirion?
Or are the cold waters flowing from distant mountains dried up?
15 But my people have forgotten me.
They make smoke offerings to the idols,[c]
and they caused them to stumble in their ways, the ancient ways,
to go into bypaths,[d] not one that is built up.
16 To make their land a horror,
an object of whistling for eternity.
All who pass by it will be appalled,
and he will shake his head.
17 Like the wind from the east
I will scatter them before[e] the enemy.
I will show them my back and not my face
in the day of their disaster.’”

Jeremiah’s Imprecatory Prayer

18 Then they said, “Come and let us plan plans against Jeremiah, for instruction will not be lost from the priest, nor advice from the wise man, nor the word from the prophet. Come and let us bring charges against him,[f] and let us not listen attentively to any of his words.”

19 Listen attentively to me, O Yahweh,
and listen to the voice of my opponents.
20 Should good be repaid in place of evil?
Yet they have dug a pit for me.
Remember my standing before you[g] to speak good for them,
to avert your wrath from them.
21 Therefore[h] give their children to the famine,
and hand them over to the power[i] of the sword,
and let their wives be bereaved and widows,
and let their men be killed by death,
their young men struck dead
by the sword in the battle.
22 Let a cry for help be heard from their houses
when you suddenly bring upon them the raiding band,
for they have dug a pit to catch me,
and they have fixed secretly a trap for my feet.
23 But you, O Yahweh, you know
all their plans of assassination against me.[j]
You must not make atonement for their iniquity,
and you must not cause their sin to be blotted out from before you.[k]
But let them be overthrown before you.[l]
Deal with them in the time of your anger.

1 Timothy 3:14-4:5

The Mystery of Godliness Described

14 I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you in a short time. 15 But if I am delayed, I am writing[a] in order that you may know how one must conduct oneself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and mainstay[b] of the truth. 16 And most certainly, great is the mystery of godliness:

Who was revealed in the flesh,
    was vindicated by[c] the Spirit,
was seen by angels,
    was proclaimed among the Gentiles[d],
was believed on in the world,
    was taken up in glory.

The Coming Apostasy

Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the last times some will depart from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, by the hypocrisy of liars, who are seared in their own conscience, who forbid marrying and insist on abstaining from foods that God created for sharing in with thankfulness by those who believe and who know the truth, because everything created by God is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is[e] received with thankfulness, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
