Psalm 50:1-8

Psalm 50

God as Judge

A psalm of Asaph.(A)

The Mighty One, God,[a] the Lord, speaks;
he summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to its setting.(B)
From Zion, the perfection of beauty,
God appears in radiance.[b](C)
Our God is coming; he will not be silent!
Devouring fire precedes him,
and a storm rages around him.(D)
On high, he summons heaven and earth
in order to judge his people:(E)
“Gather my faithful ones to me,
those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”(F)
The heavens proclaim his righteousness,(G)
for God is the Judge.(H)Selah

“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
I will testify against you, Israel.
I am God, your God.(I)
I do not rebuke you for your sacrifices
or for your burnt offerings,
which are continually before me.(J)

Psalm 50:22-23

22 “Understand this, you who forget God,
or I will tear you apart,
and there will be no one to rescue you.(A)
23 Whoever offers a thanksgiving sacrifice honors me,
and whoever orders his conduct,
I will show him the salvation of God.”(B)

Isaiah 9:8-17

The Hand Raised against Israel

The Lord sent a message against Jacob;
it came against Israel.
All the people—
Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria(A)—will know it.
They will say with pride and arrogance,
10 “The bricks have fallen,
but we will rebuild with cut stones;
the sycamores have been cut down,
but we will replace them with cedars.”
11 The Lord has raised up Rezin’s adversaries against him
and stirred up his enemies.
12 Aram from the east and Philistia from the west
have consumed Israel with open mouths.
In all this, his anger has not turned away,
and his hand is still raised to strike.(B)

13 The people did not turn to him who struck them;
they did not seek the Lord of Armies.
14 So the Lord cut off Israel’s head and tail,(C)
palm branch and reed in a single day.
15 The head is the elder, the honored one;(D)
the tail is the prophet, the one teaching lies.(E)
16 The leaders of the people mislead them,
and those they mislead are swallowed up.[a]
17 Therefore the Lord does not rejoice
over[b] Israel’s young men
and has no compassion
on its fatherless and widows,
for everyone is a godless evildoer,(F)
and every mouth speaks folly.
In all this, his anger has not turned away,
and his hand is still raised to strike.

Romans 9:1-9

Israel’s Rejection of Christ

I speak the truth in Christ(A)—I am not lying; my conscience testifies to me through the Holy Spirit[a] that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish(B) that I myself were cursed(C) and cut off[b] from Christ for the benefit of my brothers and sisters, my own flesh and blood. They are Israelites,(D) and to them belong the adoption,(E) the glory,(F) the covenants,(G) the giving of the law,(H) the temple service,(I) and the promises.(J) The ancestors are theirs,(K) and from them, by physical descent,[c] came the Christ,(L) who is God(M) over all,(N) praised forever.[d](O) Amen.

God’s Gracious Election of Israel

Now it is not as though the word of God has failed,(P) because not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.(Q) Neither is it the case that all of Abraham’s children are his descendants.[e](R) On the contrary, your offspring will be traced[f] through Isaac.[g](S) That is, it is not the children by physical descent[h] who are God’s children,(T) but the children of the promise(U) are considered to be the offspring. For this is the statement of the promise: At this time I will come, and Sarah will have a son.[i](V)
