Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
O God, Do Not Be Quiet
A Song. A Psalm of Asaph.
83 O God, (A)do not remain at rest;
(B)Do not be silent and, O God, do not be quiet.
2 For behold, Your enemies (C)roar,
And (D)those who hate You have (E)lifted up their heads.
3 They (F)make shrewd plans against Your people,
And [a]conspire together against (G)Your [b]treasured ones.
4 They have said, “Come, and (H)let us wipe them out [c]as a nation,
That the (I)name of Israel be remembered no more.”
5 For they have [d](J)conspired together with one heart;
Against You they cut a covenant:
6 The tents of (K)Edom and the (L)Ishmaelites,
(M)Moab and the (N)Hagrites;
7 (O)Gebal and (P)Ammon and (Q)Amalek,
(R)Philistia with the inhabitants of (S)Tyre;
8 (T)Assyria also has joined with them;
They have become [e]the power of the (U)children of Lot. [f]Selah.
9 Do to them (V)as to Midian,
As (W)to Sisera, and Jabin at the river of Kishon,
10 Who were destroyed at En-dor,
Who (X)were as dung for the ground.
11 Make their nobles like (Y)Oreb and Zeeb
And all their princes like (Z)Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 Who said, “(AA)Let us possess for ourselves
The (AB)pastures of God.”
13 O my God, make them like the [g](AC)whirling dust,
Like (AD)chaff before the wind.
14 Like (AE)fire that burns the forest
And like a flame that (AF)burns up the mountains,
15 So pursue them (AG)with Your tempest
And dismay them with Your storm.
16 (AH)Fill their faces with disgrace,
That they may seek Your name, O Yahweh.
17 Let them be (AI)ashamed and dismayed forever,
And let them be humiliated and perish,
18 That they may (AJ)know that (AK)You alone—Your name is Yahweh—
Are the (AL)Most High over all the earth.
31 Now (A)Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim; and he passed over the Jordan with the king in order to send him off over the Jordan. 32 Now Barzillai was very old, being eighty years old; and he had [a](B)sustained the king while he stayed at Mahanaim, for he was a very great man. 33 And the king said to Barzillai, “You pass over with me and I will [b]sustain you in Jerusalem with me.” 34 But Barzillai said to the king, “(C)How long [c]have I yet to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? 35 I am [d]now (D)eighty years old. Can I know between good and bad? Or can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Or can I hear anymore (E)the voice of singing men and women? (F)Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king? 36 Your servant would merely pass over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king compensate me with this reward? 37 Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the grave of my father and my mother. However, here is your servant (G)Chimham, let him pass over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.” 38 So the king answered, “Chimham shall pass over with me, and I will do for him what is good in your sight; and whatever you [e]require of me, I will do for you.” 39 Then all the people passed over the Jordan and the king passed over too. The king then (H)kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his place.
40 Now the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah and also (I)half the people of Israel [f]accompanied the king. 41 And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “(J)Why had our brothers (K)the men of Judah stolen you away, and caused the king and his household and all David’s men with him to pass over the Jordan?” 42 Then all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because (L)the king is a close relative to [g]us. Why then [h]are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s expense, or has [i]anything been taken for us?” 43 But the men of Israel answered the men of Judah and said, “[j](M)We have ten parts in the king, therefore [k]we also have more claim on David than you. Why then did you treat us with contempt? Was it not [l]our word first to have [m]our king return?” Yet the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel.
10 For as many as are of the works of [a]the Law are under a curse, for it is written, “(A)Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to do them.” 11 Now that (B)no one is justified [b]by [c]the Law before God is evident, [d]for “(C)The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 [e]However, the Law is not [f]of faith; rather, “(D)He who does them shall live [g]by them.” 13 Christ (E)redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “(F)Cursed is everyone who hangs on (G)a [h]tree”— 14 in order that (H)in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might [i]come to the Gentiles, so that we (I)would receive (J)the promise of the Spirit through faith.
