1 Kings 21:1-10

Ahab Takes Naboth’s Vineyard

21 This is what happened next. Naboth from Jezreel had a vineyard in Jezreel next to the palace of King Ahab of Samaria.

Ahab told Naboth, “Give me your vineyard. It will become my vegetable garden because it is near my house. I will give you a better vineyard for it. Or if you prefer, I will pay you a fair price for it.”

Naboth told Ahab, “Yahweh has forbidden me to give you what I inherited from my ancestors.”

Resentful and upset, Ahab went home because of what Naboth from Jezreel had told him. (Naboth had said, “I will not give you what I inherited from my ancestors.”) So Ahab lay on the couch, turned his face from everyone, and refused to eat.

His wife Jezebel came to him and asked, “Why are you so resentful of everything? Why don’t you eat?”

He told her, “I talked to Naboth from Jezreel. I said to him, ‘Sell me your vineyard. Or, if you like, I’ll give you another vineyard for it.’ But he said, ‘I won’t give you my vineyard.’”

His wife Jezebel said to him, “Aren’t you king of Israel? Get up, eat, and cheer up. I’ll give you the vineyard belonging to Naboth from Jezreel.”

So Jezebel wrote letters, signed them with Ahab’s name, and sealed them with his seal. She sent them to the respected leaders and nobles living in Naboth’s city. In these letters she wrote: “Announce a fast. Seat Naboth as leader of the people. 10 Have two good-for-nothing men sit opposite him and accuse him of cursing Elohim and the king. Then stone him to death outside the city.”

1 Kings 21:11-14

11 The men in Naboth’s city—the respected leaders and nobles who lived there—did what Jezebel asked them to do. They did just as she had written in the letters she sent. 12 They announced a fast and had Naboth seated as the leader of the people. 13 The two good-for-nothing men came in and sat opposite him. In front of the people, these men accused Naboth of cursing Elohim and the king. So the people stoned him to death outside the city. 14 Then the leaders sent this message to Jezebel: “Naboth has been stoned to death.”

1 Kings 21:15-21

15 Jezebel received the message and said to Ahab, “Get up! Confiscate the vineyard which Naboth from Jezreel refused to sell you. He’s dead now.”

16 When he heard about Naboth’s death, Ahab went to confiscate the vineyard.

17 Then Yahweh spoke his word to Elijah from Tishbe: 18 “Go, meet King Ahab of Israel, who lives in Samaria. He went to confiscate Naboth’s vineyard. 19 Tell him, ‘This is what Yahweh asks: Have you murdered someone just to confiscate a vineyard?’ Then tell him, ‘This is what Yahweh says: At the place where the dogs licked up Naboth’s blood, the dogs will lick up your blood.’”

20 Ahab asked Elijah, “So you’ve found me, my enemy?”

Elijah answered, “I found you. Because you sold yourself to do what Yahweh considers evil. 21 So I am going to bring evil on you. I will destroy your descendants. I will destroy every male[a] in Ahab’s house, whether slave or freeman in Israel.

Psalm 5:1-8

Psalm 5

For the choir director; for flutes; a psalm by David.

Open your ears to my words, O Yahweh.
    Consider my innermost thoughts.
Pay attention to my cry for help, my Melek and my Elohim,
because I pray only to you.
In the morning, O Yahweh, hear my voice.
In the morning I lay my needs in front of you,
            and I wait.

You are not an El who takes pleasure in wickedness.
Evil will never be your guest.
Those who brag cannot stand in your sight.
    You hate all troublemakers.
You destroy those who tell lies.
Yahweh is disgusted with bloodthirsty and deceitful people.

But I will enter your house because of your great mercy.
Out of reverence for you, I will bow toward your holy temple.
O Yahweh, lead me in your righteousness because of those who spy on me.
Make your way in front of me smooth.

Galatians 2:15-21

15 We are Jewish by birth, not sinners from other nations. 16 Yet, we know that people don’t receive God’s approval by any effort to follow the laws in the Scriptures, but only by believing in Yeshua Christ. So we also believed in Yeshua Christ in order to receive God’s approval by faith in Christ and not by our own efforts. People won’t receive God’s approval by their own efforts.

17 If we, the same people who are searching for God’s approval in Christ, are still sinners, does that mean that Christ encourages us to sin? That’s unthinkable! 18 If I rebuild something that I’ve torn down, I admit that I was wrong to tear it down. 19 When I tried to obey the laws in the Scriptures, those laws killed me. As a result, I live in a relationship with God. I have been crucified with Christ. 20 I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live I live by believing in God’s Son, who loved me and took the punishment for my sins. 21 I don’t reject God’s kindness.[a] If we receive God’s approval by obeying the laws in the Scriptures, then Christ’s death was pointless.

Luke 7:36-8:3

A Sinful Woman Receives Forgiveness

36 One of the Pharisees invited Yeshua to eat with him. Yeshua went to the Pharisee’s house and was eating at the table.

37 A woman who lived a sinful life in that city found out that Yeshua was eating at the Pharisee’s house. So she took a bottle of perfume 38 and knelt at his feet. She was crying and washed his feet with her tears. Then she dried his feet with her hair, kissed them over and over again, and poured the perfume on them.

39 The Pharisee who had invited Yeshua saw this and thought, “If this man really were a prophet, he would know what sort of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner.”

40 Yeshua spoke up, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

Simon replied, “Teacher, you’re free to speak.”

41 So Yeshua said, “Two men owed a moneylender some money. One owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other owed him fifty. 42 When they couldn’t pay it back, he was kind enough to cancel their debts. Now, who do you think will love him the most?”

43 Simon answered, “I suppose the one who had the largest debt canceled.”

Yeshua said to him, “You’re right!” 44 Then, turning to the woman, he said to Simon, “You see this woman, don’t you? I came into your house. You didn’t wash my feet. But she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 45 You didn’t give me a kiss. But ever since I came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You didn’t put any olive oil on my head. But she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 That’s why I’m telling you that her many sins have been forgiven. Her great love proves that. But whoever receives little forgiveness loves very little.”

48 Then Yeshua said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.” 49 The other guests thought, “Who is this man who even forgives sins?”

50 Yeshua said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace!”

Women Who Supported Jesus

After this, Yeshua traveled from one city and village to another. He spread the Good News about God’s kingdom. The twelve apostles were with him. Also, some women were with him. They had been cured from evil spirits and various illnesses. These women were Mary, also called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out; Joanna, whose husband Chusa was Herod’s administrator; Susanna; and many other women. They provided financial support for Yeshua and his disciples.
