Psalm 68:1-10

The God of Israel at Sinai

68 May God rise up. May those who hate Him be divided. And may they run away from Him. Drive them away like smoke in the wind. Let the sinful be destroyed before God like a candle melts by the fire. But let those who are right and good be glad. Let them be happy before God. Yes, let them be full of joy. Sing to God. Sing praises to His name. Make a road for Him Who goes through the deserts. The Lord is His name. Be full of joy before Him.

God in His holy house is a father to those who have no father. And He keeps the women safe whose husbands have died. God makes a home for those who are alone. He leads men out of prison into happiness and well-being. But those who fight against Him live in an empty desert.

O God, when You went out before Your people, when You walked through the desert, the earth shook. The heavens poured down rain before God. And Sinai shook before God, the God of Israel. You sent a heavy rain, O God. You brought life back to Your promised land when it was dry. 10 Your people made it their home. O God, You gave the poor what they needed because You are good.

Psalm 68:19-20

19 Honor and thanks be to the Lord, Who carries our heavy loads day by day. He is the God Who saves us. 20 Our God is a God Who sets us free. The way out of death belongs to God the Lord.

Job 22:1-20

Eliphaz Talks

22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered, “Can a man be of use to God? Can a wise man be of use to himself? Is the All-powerful pleased if you are right and good? Is it of any use to Him if your ways were perfect? Is it because of how you honor God that He speaks strong words to you and punishes you? Have you not done much wrong and your sins have no end? For you have taken things from your brothers when they did not owe you anything. You have taken all their clothing and they have had nothing to wear. To those who were tired, you have given no water to drink. And you have kept bread from the hungry. But you were a powerful and respected man owning land and living on it. You have sent women away with nothing, whose husbands have died. And you have crushed the strength of children who have no parents. 10 So traps are all around you, and much fear comes upon you all at once. 11 This is why it is dark and you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you.

12 “Is not God high up in heaven? See the highest stars, how high they are! 13 So you say, ‘What does God know? Can He judge through the darkness? 14 Clouds cover Him so that He cannot see. He walks on the roof of heaven.’ 15 Will you keep to the old way which sinful men have walked? 16 They were taken away before their time. The ground they stood on was washed away by a river. 17 They said to God, ‘Leave us!’ and ‘What can the All-powerful do to us?’ 18 Yet He filled their houses with good things. But the wisdom of the sinful is far from me. 19 Those who are right and good see it and are glad. Those who are without guilt make fun of them, 20 saying, ‘For sure those who hate us are destroyed, and fire has destroyed what they owned.’

Galatians 2:1-10

The Church Leaders in Jerusalem Say Paul Is a True Missionary

Fourteen years later I went again to Jerusalem. This time I took Barnabas. Titus went with us also. God showed me in a special way I should go. I spoke to them about the Good News that I preach among the people who are not Jews. First of all, I talked alone to the important church leaders. I wanted them to know what I was preaching. I did not want that which I was doing or would be doing to be wasted.

Titus was with me. Even being a Greek, he did not have to go through the religious act of becoming a Jew. Some men who called themselves Christians asked about this. They got in our meeting without being asked. They came there to find out how free we are who belong to Christ. They tried to get us to be chained to the Law. But we did not listen to them or do what they wanted us to do so the truth of the Good News might be yours.

Those who seemed to be important church leaders did not help me. They did not teach me anything new. What they were, I do not care. God looks on us all as being the same. Anyway, they saw how I had been given the work of preaching the Good News to the people who are not Jews, as Peter had been given the work of preaching the Good News to the Jews. For God helped Peter work with the Jews. He also helped me work with those who are not Jews. James and Peter and John were thought of as being the head church leaders. They could see that God’s loving-favor had been given to me. Barnabas and I were joined together with them by shaking hands. Then we were sent off to work with the people who are not Jews. They were to work with the Jews. 10 They asked us to do only one thing. We were to remember to help poor people. I think this is important also.
