Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
46 1 A song of triumph or thanksgiving for the deliverance of Jerusalem, after Sennacherib with his army was driven away, or some other like sudden and marvelous deliverance by the mighty hand of God. 8 Whereby the Prophet commending this great benefit, doth exhort the faithful to give themselves wholly into the hand of God, doubting nothing but that under his protection they shall be safe against all the assaults of their enemies, because this is his delight to assuage the rage of the wicked, when they are most busy against the just.
To him that excelleth upon [a]Alamoth, a song committed to the sons of Korah.
1 God is our [b]hope and strength, and help in [c]troubles, ready to be found.
2 Therefore will not we [d]fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains fall into the midst of the sea,
3 Though the waters thereof [e]rage and be troubled, and the mountains shake at the surges of the same. Selah.
4 Yet there is a [f]River, whose stream shall make glad the City of God: even the Sanctuary of the Tabernacles of the most High.
5 God is in the midst of it: therefore shall it not be moved: God shall help it [g]very early.
6 When the nations raged, and the kingdoms were moved, God [h]thundered, and the earth melted.
7 The Lord of hosts is [i]with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
8 Come and behold the works of the Lord, [j]what desolations he hath made in the earth.
9 He maketh wars to cease unto the ends of the world, he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear, and burneth the chariots with fire.
10 Be [k]still and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the heathen, and I will be exalted in the earth.
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
4 ¶ These are the [a]generations of the heavens and of the earth, when they were created, in the day, that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
5 And every [b]plant of the field, before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field, before it grew, for the Lord God had not caused it to [c]rain upon the earth, neither was there a man to till the ground,
6 But a mist went up from the earth, and watered all the earth.
7 ¶ The Lord God also [d]made the man [e]of the dust of the ground, and breathed in his face breath of life, (A)and the man was a living soul.
8 And the Lord God planted a garden Eastward in [f]Eden, and there he put the man whom he had made.
9 (For out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree pleasant to the sight, and good for meat: the [g]tree of life also in the midst of the garden, [h]and the tree of knowledge of good and of evil.
10 And out of Eden went a river to water the garden, and from thence it was divided, and became into four heads.
11 The name of one is Pishon: the same compasseth the whole land of [i]Havilah, where is gold.
12 And the gold of that land is good: there is [j]Bdellium, and the Onyx stone.
13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same compasseth the whole land of [k]Cush.
14 And the name of the [third] river is [l]Hiddekel: this goeth toward the East side of [m]Ashshur: and the fourth river is [n]Parah)
15 ¶ Then the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden, that he might [o]dress it, and keep it.
16 And the Lord God [p]commanded the man, saying, [q]Thou shalt eat freely of every tree of the garden,
17 But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for [r]in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt die the [s]death.
18 Also the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be himself alone: I will make him an help [t]meet for him.
19 So the Lord God formed of the earth every beast of the field, and every fowl of the heaven, and brought them unto the [u]man to see how he would call them: for howsoever the man named the living creature, so was the name thereof.
20 The man therefore gave names unto all cattle, and to the fowl of the heaven, and to every beast of the field: but for Adam found he not an helper meet for him.
21 ¶ Therefore the Lord God caused an heavy sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in stead thereof.
22 And the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man, [v]made he a [w]woman, and brought her to the man.
23 Then the man said, (B)This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called [x]woman, because she was taken out of the man.
24 (C)Therefore shall man leave [y]his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall be one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and they were not [z]ashamed.
6 (A)[a]Notwithstanding it cannot be that the word of God should take none effect: for all they are not [b]Israel, which are of Israel:
7 Neither are they all children, because they are the seed of Abraham: (B)[c]but, In [d]Isaac shall thy seed be called:
8 [e]That is, they which are the children of the [f]flesh, are not the children of God: but the (C)children of the [g]promise, are counted for the seed.
9 [h]For this is a word of promise, (D)In this same time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.
10 [i]Neither he only felt this, but also (E)Rebecca, when she had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac.
11 For ere the children were born, and when they had neither done good nor evil (that the [j]purpose of God might [k]remain according to election, not by works, but by him that calleth.)
12 [l]It was said unto her, (F)The Elder shall serve the younger.
13 As it is written, (G)I have loved Jacob, and have hated Esau.
