Isaiah 40:1-11

Comfort for God’s People

40 “Comfort; comfort my people,” says your God.

“Speak to the heart of Jerusalem, and call to her,

that her compulsory labor is fulfilled, that her sin is paid for,
    that she has received[a] from the hand of Yahweh double for all her sins.”
A voice is calling in the wilderness, “Clear the way of Yahweh!
    Make a highway smooth in the desert for our God!
Every valley shall be lifted up,
    and every mountain and hill shall become low,
And the rough ground shall be like a plain,
    and the rugged ground like a valley-plain.
And the glory of Yahweh shall be revealed,
    and all humankind[b] together shall see it,

for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.”

A voice is saying, “Call!”
    And he said, “What shall I call?”
All humankind[c] are grass,
    and all his loyalty is like the flowers of the field.
Grass withers; the flower withers
when the breath of Yahweh blows on it.
    Surely the people are grass.
Grass withers; the flower withers,
    but[d] the word of our God will stand forever.
Get yourself[e] up to a high mountain, Zion, bringer of good news!
    Lift up your voice with strength, Jerusalem, bringer of good news!
Lift it up; you must not fear!
    Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!”
10 Look! The Lord Yahweh comes with strength,[f]
    and his arm rules for him.
Look! His reward is with him,
    and his recompense in his presence.[g]
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
    he will gather the lambs in his arm,
and he will carry them in his bosom;
    he will lead those who nurse.

Psalm 85:1-2

Hope in God’s Future Help

For the music director. Of the sons of Korah. A psalm.[a]

85 O Yahweh, you favored your land.
You restored the fortunes[b] of Jacob.
You took away the guilt[c] of your people;
you covered all their sin. Selah

Psalm 85:8-13

I will hear what God, Yahweh, will speak,
because he will speak peace
to his people, even his faithful ones,[a]
but let them not return to folly.
Surely his salvation is near for those who fear him,
that glory may abide in our land.
10 Loyal love and faithfulness[b] will meet one another;
righteousness and peace will kiss.
11 Faithfulness[c] will sprout from the ground,
and righteousness will look down from heaven.
12 Yes, Yahweh will give what is good,
and our land will give its produce.
13 Righteousness will go before him,
and it will make his steps a pathway.

2 Peter 3:8-15

Now, dear friends, do not let this one thing escape your notice, that one day with the Lord is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day. The Lord is not delaying the promise, as some consider slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he[a] does not want any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will disappear with a rushing noise, and the celestial bodies will be destroyed by[b] being burned up, and the earth and the deeds done on it will be disclosed. 11 Because[c] all these things are being destroyed in this way, what sort of people must you be in holy behavior and godliness, 12 while[d] waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by[e] being burned up and the celestial bodies will melt as they[f] are consumed by heat! 13 But according to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness resides.

Final Exhortations and Conclusion

14 Therefore, dear friends, because you[g] are waiting for these things, make every effort to be found at peace, spotless and unblemished in him. 15 And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as also our dear brother Paul wrote to you, according to the wisdom that was given to him,

Mark 1:1-8

John the Baptist Begins His Ministry

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ.[a] Just as it is written in the prophet Isaiah,

“Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face,
    who will prepare your way,
the voice of one shouting in the wilderness,
    ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
    make straight his paths!’”[b]

John was there baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming[c] a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the Judean region and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. And John was dressed in camel’s hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And he was preaching, saying, “One who is more powerful than I is coming after me, of whom I am not worthy to bend down and[d] untie the strap of his sandals. I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
