Psalm 149

Psalm 149[a]

149 Praise the Lord.
Sing to the Lord a new song.
Praise him in the assembly of the godly.[b]
Let Israel rejoice in their Creator.
Let the people[c] of Zion delight in their King.[d]
Let them praise his name with dancing.
Let them sing praises to him to the accompaniment of the tambourine and harp.
For the Lord takes delight in his people;
he exalts the oppressed by delivering them.[e]
Let the godly rejoice because of their vindication.[f]
Let them shout for joy upon their beds.[g]
May the praises of God be in their mouths
and a two-edged sword in their hands,
in order to take[h] revenge on the nations,
and punish foreigners.
The godly bind[i] their enemies’ kings in chains,
and their nobles in iron shackles,
and execute the judgment to which their enemies[j] have been sentenced.[k]
All his loyal followers will be vindicated.[l]
Praise the Lord.

Exodus 11

Plague Ten: Death

11 [a] The Lord said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt; after that he will release you from this place. When he releases you,[b] he will drive you out completely[c] from this place. Instruct[d] the people that each man and each woman is to request[e] from his or her neighbor[f] items of silver and gold.”[g]

(Now the Lord granted the people favor with[h] the Egyptians. Moreover, the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, respected by Pharaoh’s servants and by the Egyptian people.)[i]

Moses said, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘About midnight I will go throughout Egypt,[j] and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh[k] who sits on his throne, to the firstborn son of the slave girl who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle. There will be a great cry throughout the whole land of Egypt, such as there has never been,[l] nor ever will be again.[m] But against any of the Israelites not even a dog will bark[n] against either people or animals,[o] so that you may know that the Lord distinguishes[p] between Egypt and Israel.’ All these your servants will come down to me and bow down[q] to me, saying, ‘Go, you and all the people who follow[r] you,’ and after that I will go out.” Then Moses[s] went out from Pharaoh in great anger.

The Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that my wonders[t] may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”

10 So Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not release the Israelites from his land.

Matthew 23:29-36

29 “Woe to you, experts in the law[a] and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You[b] build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves[c] of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors,[d] we would not have participated with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 By saying this you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up then the measure of your ancestors! 33 You snakes, you offspring of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?[e]

34 “For this reason I[f] am sending you prophets and wise men and experts in the law,[g] some of whom you will kill and crucify,[h] and some you will flog[i] in your synagogues[j] and pursue from town to town, 35 so that on you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah,[k] whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 I tell you the truth,[l] this generation will be held responsible for all these things![m]
