Psalm 8

The music leader must use special music.

This is a song that David wrote.

The sky at night[a]

Lord, our ruler,
your name is famous all over the world.
The sky above shows how great you are.
You have taught children and babies to praise you.
You do that to show your enemies how strong you are.
Anyone who turns against you has to be quiet.
Your cruel enemies can do nothing!
You made the skies with your own hands.
When I look up, I see the moon and the stars.
You have put them all in their right place.
So why do you even think about men and women?
Why do you take care of humans?
You have made their place a little below God himself.[b]
You have given them honour, like kings.
You have chosen them to rule everything that you have made.
You have put everything under their authority.
7-8 Yes! Humans rule them all:
    Farm animals and wild animals,
birds, fish and all the things that swim in the sea.

Lord, our ruler,
your name is famous all over the world.

Exodus 2:15-22

15 Pharaoh heard about what had happened. He wanted to kill Moses. So Moses ran away from Pharaoh. He went from Egypt to the country called Midian and he lived there.[a]

One day, Moses sat down by a well which was near where he lived.

16 There was a priest in Midian who had seven daughters. Those seven young women came to get water out of the well. They used the water to fill the places where the animals drink. Then their father's sheep and goats could drink there. 17 But some shepherds then arrived at the well. They made the girls go away. So Moses stood up and he went to help the young women. He gave water to their animals.[b]

18 Then the girls went back home to Reuel, their father. He asked them, ‘Why have you come home so soon today?’ 19 They answered, ‘An Egyptian man saved us from the shepherds. He even took water from the well and he gave it to our animals.’ 20 Reuel said to his daughters, ‘So where is the man? You should not have left him there. Ask him to come here so that he can eat a meal with us.’

21 Moses agreed to stay with Reuel. Reuel gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses as his wife. 22 Later, Zipporah gave birth to a son for Moses. Moses gave the boy the name ‘Gershom’. He called him that because he said, ‘I am living as a stranger in a foreign country.’[c]

Matthew 26:6-13

A woman pours beautiful oil on Jesus' head

Then Jesus went to Bethany and he visited Simon at his house. At one time, Simon had had a bad disease of the skin.[a]

While Jesus was eating a meal there, a woman came into the house. She brought a small stone jar with her. The jar contained expensive oil with a very nice smell.[b] She poured the oil over Jesus' head while he sat there.

Jesus' disciples saw what the woman had done. They became angry and they said, ‘This woman should not have wasted the oil. She could have sold it for a lot of money. Then she could have given the money to poor people.’

10 Jesus knew what his disciples were saying. So he said to them, ‘Do not cause trouble for her. She has done a good thing to me. 11 You will always have poor people with you. But you will not always have me with you. 12 She has poured oil over my body. So now I will be ready for people to bury me. 13 I tell you this: Everywhere in the world people will speak about this good news. At the same time, they will also tell people about the good thing that this woman has done. And so people will remember her.’
