Psalm 105:1-11

God takes care of his people[a]

105 Thank the Lord!
    Make his name famous!
Tell people in all the nations
    what he has done.
Sing songs and make music
    to praise him!
Tell people about the miracles that he has done.
Boast about his holy name.[b]
Everybody who wants to worship the Lord
    should be very happy!
Ask the Lord to help you.
Ask him to give you strength.
Always try to be near him
    and worship him.
Remember the great things that he has done.
Remember his miracles,
and the commands that he has spoken.[c]
Remember that you are descendants of God's servant, Abraham.
You are Jacob's descendants,
and God has chosen you to be his people.

He is the Lord, our God.
He rules the whole earth with justice.
He will always remember the covenant
    that he made with us.
He made that promise to continue for ever.
That is the promise that he made to Abraham,
and that he also made to Isaac.
10 He repeated it to Jacob as a law.
It was a covenant with Israel's people
    that would continue for ever.[d]
11 He promised Jacob,
‘I will give to you the land of Canaan.
It will belong to you,
    and to your descendants.’

Psalm 105:45

45 Then God's people could obey his commands
    and his laws.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Genesis 29:1-8

Jacob and Laban

29 Jacob continued on his journey. He came to the land where the people from the east live. He saw a well in a field. Three groups of sheep lay near it. Shepherds took water from the well to give to their sheep. There was a large stone that covered the top of the well. The shepherds waited until all the sheep were there together. Then they removed the stone from the top of the well. They gave their sheep water to drink, and then they put the stone back on the top of the well.

Jacob asked the shepherds, ‘My brothers, where are you from?’ The shepherds replied, ‘We are from Haran.’ Jacob said, ‘Do you know Laban? He is Nahor's grandson.’ The shepherds replied, ‘Yes, we know him.’ Jacob asked them, ‘Is he in good health?’ They replied, ‘Yes, he is. Look. Here comes his daughter now, with their sheep. Her name is Rachel.’ Jacob said to them, ‘The sun is still high in the sky. It is not yet the right time to bring all the sheep together. So give them some water now. Then they can go back to the fields and eat more grass.’ The shepherds said, ‘We cannot do that. We have to wait until all the sheep are here together. Then we can remove the big stone from the well and we can give water to the sheep.’

1 Corinthians 4:14-20

14 I do not write these things to make you ashamed. You are like my own children that I love. So I want to teach you what is right. 15 When I told the good news about Jesus Christ to you, I became like a father for you. You may have ten thousand teachers to help you understand the message about Christ. But I am the only person who is like a father for you. 16 That is why I want you to copy my example. 17 To help you to do that, I have sent Timothy to visit you. He is like a son to me, and I love him very much. He continues to serve the Lord well. He will help you to remember how I live as a Christian. I teach the same things to all groups of Christians everywhere.

18 Some people among you have become proud. They think that I will never come back to warn them. 19 But I will come to visit you again soon, if the Lord wants me to. Then I will find out what these proud people are really like. It is not just the words that they say. I will find out if they have the power of God. 20 When people serve God as their king, they have God's power. They do not just speak proud words.
