Psalm 66:8-20

Bless our God, O peoples,
and cause the sound of his praise to be heard,
the one who has kept our soul among the living,
and has not allowed our foot to slip.
10 For you have tested us, O God;
you have tried us as silver is tried.
11 You brought us into the net;
you placed a heavy burden[a] on our backs.
12 You let men[b] ride over our heads.
We went through fire and through water,
but you have brought us out to the place of abundance.[c]
13 I will come into your house[d] with burnt offerings.
I will pay to you my vows
14 that my lips uttered,
and my mouth spoke in my distress.
15 Burnt offerings of fat animals I will offer to you,
with the smoke of rams.
I will do[e] cattle with rams. Selah
16 Come and hear, all you God-fearers, and I will tell
what he has done for me.[f]
17 I called to him with my mouth,
and he was extolled with my tongue.[g]
18 If I had considered evil in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
19 However, God has listened;
he has attended to the sound of my prayer.
20 Blessed be God,
who has not turned aside my prayer,
or his loyal love from me.

Genesis 7

Then[a] Yahweh said to Noah, “Go—you and all your household—into the ark, for I have seen you are righteous before me in this generation. From all the clean animals you must take for yourself seven pairs,[b] a male and its mate. And from the animals that are not clean you must take two, a male and its mate, as well as from the birds of heaven[c] seven pairs,[d] male and female, to keep their kind alive[e] on the face of the earth. For within seven days[f] I will send rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights. And I will blot out all the living creatures that I have made from upon the face of the ground.” And Noah did according to all that Yahweh commanded him.

The Flood

Noah was six hundred years old[g] when[h] the flood waters came upon the earth. And Noah and his sons and his wife, and the wives of his sons with him, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. Of clean animals, and of animals which are not clean, and of the birds, and everything that creeps upon the ground, two of each[i] went to Noah, into the ark, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 And it happened that after seven days the waters of the flood came over the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of the life of Noah, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month—on that day all the springs of the great deep were split open, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain came upon the earth forty days and forty nights. 13 On this same day, Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and the wife of Noah and the three wives of his sons with them, went into the ark, 14 they and all the living creatures according to their[j] kind, and all the domesticated animals according to their[k] kind, and all the creatures that creep upon the earth according to their[l] kind, all the birds according to their[m] kind, every winged creature. 15 And they came to Noah to the ark, two of each,[n] from every living thing in which was the breath of life. 16 And those that came, male and female, of every living thing, came as God had commanded him. And Yahweh shut the door behind him. 17 And the flood came forty days and forty nights upon the earth. And the waters increased, and lifted the ark, and it rose up from the earth. 18 And the waters prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth. And the ark went upon the surface[o] of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed overwhelmingly[p] upon the earth, and they covered all the high mountains which were under the entire heaven.[q] 20 The waters swelled fifteen cubits above the mountains, covering them.[r] 21 And every living thing that moved on the earth perished—the birds, and the domesticated animals, and the wild animals, and everything that swarmed on the earth, and all humankind. 22 Everything in whose nostrils was the breath of life,[s] among all that was on dry land, died. 23 And he[t] blotted out every living thing upon the surface of the ground, from humankind, to animals, to creeping things, and to the birds of heaven;[u] they were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained. 24 And the waters prevailed over the earth one hundred and fifty days.

Acts 27:13-38

A Violent Storm at Sea

13 And when[a] a southwest wind began to blow gently, because they[b] thought they could accomplish their purpose, they weighed anchor and[c] sailed close along Crete. 14 But not long afterward a wind like a hurricane, called the northeaster,[d] rushed down from it.[e] 15 And when[f] the ship was caught and was not able to head into the wind, we gave way and[g] were driven along. 16 And running under the lee of a certain small island called Cauda, we were able with difficulty to get the ship’s boat under control. 17 After[h] hoisting it up,[i] they made use of supports to undergird the ship. And because they[j] were afraid lest they run aground on the Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and[k] thus were driven along. 18 And because[l] we were violently battered by the storm, on the next day they began[m] jettisoning the cargo,[n] 19 and on the third day they threw overboard the gear of the ship with their own hands. 20 But when[o] neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and with not a little bad weather confronting us,[p] finally all hope was abandoned that we would be saved.

21 And because[q] many were experiencing lack of appetite, at that time Paul stood up in their midst and[r] said, “Men, you ought to have followed my advice not to put out to sea from Crete, and thus avoided this damage and loss! 22 And now I urge you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life from among you, but only of the ship. 23 For this night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve came to me, 24 saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul! It is necessary for you to stand before Caesar, and behold, God has graciously granted you all who are sailing with you.’ 25 Therefore keep up your courage, men, for I believe God that it will be like this—according to the[s] way it was told to me. 26 But it is necessary that we run aground on some island.”

27 And when the fourteenth night had come, as[t] we were being driven in the Adriatic Sea about the middle of the night, the sailors suspected they were approaching some land.[u] 28 And taking soundings, they found twenty fathoms. So going on a little further and taking soundings again, they found fifteen fathoms. 29 And because they[v] were afraid lest somewhere we run aground against rough places, they threw down four anchors from the stern and[w] prayed for day to come. 30 And when[x] the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship and were lowering the ship’s boat into the sea, pretending as if they were going to lay out anchors from the bow, 31 Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men remain with the ship, you cannot be saved!” 32 Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the ship’s boat and let it fall away.[y]

33 And until the day was about to come, Paul was urging them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day you have waited anxiously, and[z] you have continued without eating, having taken nothing. 34 Therefore I urge you to take some food, for this is necessary for your preservation. For not a hair from your head will be lost.” 35 And after he[aa] said these things and took bread, he gave thanks to God in front of them all, and after[ab] breaking it,[ac] he began to eat. 36 So they all were[ad] encouraged and partook of food themselves. 37 (Now we were in all two hundred seventy six persons on the ship.) 38 And when they[ae] had eaten their fill of food, they lightened the ship by[af] throwing the wheat[ag] into the sea.
