Acts 2:14

Peter’s Sermon

14 Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them, “Fellow Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and pay attention to my words.

Acts 2:22-32

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know.(A) 23 Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used[a] lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.(B) 24 God raised him up, ending the pains of death,(C) because it was not possible for him to be held by death. 25 For David says of him:

I saw the Lord ever before me;
because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad
and my tongue rejoices.
Moreover, my flesh will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me in Hades
or allow your holy one to see decay.(D)
28 You have revealed the paths of life to me;
you will fill me with gladness
in your presence.[b](E)

29 “Brothers and sisters, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David: He is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.(F) 30 Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants[c] on his throne.(G) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah: He[d] was not abandoned in Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay.[e](H)

32 “God has raised(I) this Jesus; we are all witnesses of this.

Psalm 16

Psalm 16

Confidence in the Lord

A Miktam of David.(A)

Protect me, God, for I take refuge in you.(B)
I[a] said to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have nothing good besides you.”[b](C)
As for the holy people who are in the land,(D)
they are the noble ones.
All my delight is in them.
The sorrows of those who take another god
for themselves will multiply;
I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood,
and I will not speak their names with my lips.(E)

Lord, you are my portion[c]
and my cup of blessing;
you hold my future.(F)
The boundary lines have fallen for me
in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.(G)

I will bless the Lord who counsels me(H)
even at night when my thoughts trouble me.[d](I)
I always let the Lord guide me.[e]
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.(J)

Therefore my heart is glad
and my whole being rejoices;
my body also rests securely.(K)
10 For you will not abandon me to Sheol;(L)
you will not allow your faithful one to see decay.(M)
11 You reveal the path of life to me;
in your presence is abundant joy;(N)
at your right hand are eternal pleasures.(O)

1 Peter 1:3-9

A Living Hope

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.(A) Because of his great mercy(B) he has given us new birth(C) into a living hope(D) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead(E) and into an inheritance that is imperishable,(F) undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven(G) for you. You are being guarded by God’s power(H) through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.(I) You rejoice in this,[a] even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials(J) so that the proven character of your faith(K)—more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire(L)—may result(M) in praise, glory, and honor(N) at the revelation of Jesus Christ.(O) Though you have not seen(P) him, you love him;(Q) though not seeing him now, you believe in him, and you rejoice(R) with inexpressible and glorious joy, because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

John 20:19-31

The Disciples Commissioned

19 When it was evening on that first day of the week,(A) the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(B)

20 Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side.(C) So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me,(D) I also send you.”(E) 22 After saying this, he breathed on them(F) and said,[a] “Receive the Holy Spirit.(G) 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”(H)

Thomas Sees and Believes

24 But Thomas(I) (called “Twin”[b]), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were telling him, “We’ve seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails,(J) and put my hand into his side,(K) I will never believe.”(L)

26 A week later his disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Don’t be faithless, but believe.”(M)

28 Thomas responded to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said, “Because you have seen me, you have believed.[c] Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.”(N)

The Purpose of This Gospel

30 Jesus performed many other signs(O) in the presence of his disciples that are not written(P) in this book.(Q) 31 But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah,(R) the Son(S) of God,[d](T) and that by believing you may have life in his name.(U)
