Exodus 24:12-18

12 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Come up to me on the mountain. Stay here. I will give you the flat stones with my Law on them. I have written on them my Law and my commands, so that you can teach them to the people.’

13 So Moses went up the mountain of God. His servant Joshua went with him. 14 Moses said to the leaders, ‘Wait here for us. We will come back to you. Aaron and Hur are here with you. If you have any arguments, they can decide who is right.’

15 When Moses went up the mountain, the cloud covered it. 16 The Lord's bright glory appeared on Sinai mountain. The cloud covered the mountain for six days. On the seventh day, the Lord called out to Moses from inside the cloud. 17 The people could see the Lord's bright glory. To them, it looked like a fire that was burning the top of the mountain. 18 Moses went up the mountain and he went into the cloud. He stayed on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights.

Psalm 2

The Lord's king rules[a]

Why are nations making plans to turn against the Lord?
    All their plans will fail!
Kings and rulers decide to work together,
    to fight against the Lord
and the king that he has chosen.
They say, ‘We will not accept their authority over us!
We will get free from their power!’[b]
The Lord who sits on his throne in heaven laughs at them.
He says that their plans are useless.
Then he becomes very angry and he frightens them.
He warns them with strong words and he says,
‘I have put my king on his throne in Zion.[c]
I have put him on my holy mountain.’

I will tell you what the Lord has promised to me, his king.
He said to me, ‘You are my son.
Yes, today I have become your father![d]
Ask me and see what I will do!
I will give you all the nations on the earth.
They will all belong to you.
You will break them with an iron sceptre,
as if they are clay pots.’

10 So, you kings, think carefully!
You who rule the nations of the world, learn this lesson:
11 Respect the Lord and serve him.
    Enjoy his rule with fear!
12 Bend down low in front of his son!
If not, the Lord will be angry.
He will quickly become very angry.
You will suddenly die!
But as for those who serve the Lord as their king,
he blesses them and he takes care of them all.

Psalm 99

The Lord is holy![a]

99 The Lord rules as king!
People on earth should shake with fear!
The Lord sits on his throne as king
    above the cherubs![b]
The earth itself should shake!
The Lord is a great king in Zion.
He rules with power
    over all the world's nations.
So they should all praise your great name.
It is a name that brings fear!
The Lord is holy!
You are a strong king who loves justice.
You have made fair rules,
so that people in Israel do what is right.
Praise the Lord our God!
Worship him as king.
    He is holy!
Moses and Aaron were two of his priests.[c]
Samuel was among those who prayed to him.
They prayed to the Lord
    and he answered them.
He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud.[d]
They obeyed his rules and his commands.
Yes, you answered them, Lord our God.
You forgave the sins of your people.
But when they did wrong things,
    you punished them.[e]
Praise the Lord our God!
Go and worship him on his holy hill,
because the Lord our God is holy!

2 Peter 1:16-21

Peter himself saw how great Christ is

16 We told you that our Lord Jesus Christ is powerful. We also told you that he will return to earth again. We were not telling you false stories that came from people's clever ideas. Instead, we were telling you what we ourselves had seen. We ourselves saw that the Lord Jesus is very great. 17-18 We were with him on the holy mountain when his Father God spoke to him.[a] God gave honour to his Son, Jesus, and he said that Jesus is great. We ourselves heard God's voice speak to Jesus from heaven above where God rules with power. He said: ‘This is my Son and I love him. He makes me very happy.’

God's messages in the Bible are very important

19 As well as that, we have the prophets' messages from long ago. They also show us very clearly that these things are true. The prophets' words are like a light that shines in a dark place. That light continues to shine in the dark until the dawn comes. So you need to think about those messages carefully. Then the morning star will rise and it will bring light deep inside you.[b] 20 It is very important that you should understand this: The prophets' messages in the Bible did not come from their own ideas. That never happens. 21 None of the prophets' messages came because any person wanted to say something. Instead, God's Holy Spirit caused people to speak words that came from God.[c]

Matthew 17:1-9

Three disciples see how great Jesus is

17 Six days after that, Jesus asked Peter and the two brothers, James and John, to go with him. Jesus led them up a high mountain by themselves. Peter, James and John saw Jesus change in front of them. He became different to look at. His face was bright like the sun. His clothes became very white and they shone. Then Moses and Elijah appeared in front of the three disciples.[a][b] They were talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good that we are here. If you want, please let me build three huts. One hut will be for you. One hut will be for Moses and one hut will be for Elijah.’[c]

While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud appeared. It covered them all. A voice spoke from the cloud and it said, ‘This is my Son and I love him. He makes me very happy. Listen to him.’

The disciples heard the voice. They threw themselves down to the ground. They were very frightened. But Jesus came to them and he touched them. ‘Stand up,’ he said. ‘Do not be afraid.’ When they looked up, they could not see anyone else. Only Jesus was there with them.

While they were walking down the mountain, Jesus said to the three disciples, ‘You must not tell anyone now about the things that you have just seen. One day, the Son of Man will die and then he will become alive again. Then you can tell people about these things.’
