Psalm 112:1-9

God makes his people strong[a]

112 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
When someone respects the Lord with fear,
    God has blessed that person!
He is happy to obey the Lord's commands.
His children will become powerful in the land.
God will bless their descendants who serve him.
His family will have valuable things,
    and they will be rich.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
God's light shines on those who serve him,
even when they are in a dark place.
God blesses those who are kind to others,
and who do what is right and fair.
People who are kind and lend money to others,
and who work in an honest way,
    will enjoy a good life.
Righteous people will never fail.
    People will always remember them.
They are not afraid to hear bad news.
They are brave,
because they trust in the Lord.
Their thoughts are strong
and they will not be afraid.
They know that they will win against their enemies.
They give their things to help poor people.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
They will be powerful
    and people will respect them.

Psalm 112:10

10 When wicked people see this,
    they will be angry.
They will show their teeth in anger,
    but then they will disappear.
Whatever wicked people want,
    they will never get it.

Isaiah 29:13-16

13 The Lord God says, ‘These people open their mouths to worship me. They use their lips to say that I am great. But they are not really thinking about me. When they worship me, they use rules that people have taught them. 14 So now I will surprise these people again. I will surprise them with great miracles! Wise people will not seem wise any more. Clever people will no longer seem to be clever.’

15 It will be very bad for people who try to deceive the Lord. They try to hide their thoughts from him. They secretly decide to do evil things. They boast and they say, ‘Nobody can see us. Nobody knows what we are doing.’

16 Your minds are really confused! You think that the clay is more important than the person who uses it to make pots! A bowl cannot say to its maker, ‘You did not make me!’ A pot cannot say to the potter, ‘You do not know what you are doing!’

Mark 7:1-8

Jesus speaks to Pharisees and to some teachers of God's Law

A group of Pharisees and some teachers of God's Law came from Jerusalem to talk with Jesus. They had been watching Jesus' disciples. Some of the disciples did not wash their hands before they ate a meal. That is to say, they did not wash them in the right way. (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat food until they have washed their hands carefully. They do this because of what their leaders taught them. When they come from the market place, they always wash themselves carefully. Unless they do this, they do not eat anything. Their leaders also gave them rules about how they should wash cups, pots and metal bowls.)

The Pharisees and the teachers of God's Law said to Jesus, ‘Your disciples do not obey the things that our leaders taught many years ago. Your disciples have not washed their hands in the right way. They are eating their food with unclean hands. That is not right.’

Jesus said to them, ‘You are hypocrites! What God's prophet Isaiah wrote about you long ago is true:

God says, “These people say good things about me,
but they do not really want to obey me.
They say that I am great.
But what they say has no purpose.
They teach their own rules, which I did not give to them.” ’[a]

Jesus then said, ‘You have stopped obeying God. Instead you obey the ideas that men teach.’
