Psalm 89:5-37

Lord, the heavens praise your wonders(A)
your faithfulness also—
in the assembly of the holy ones.(B)
For who in the skies can compare with the Lord?
Who among the heavenly beings[a] is like the Lord?(C)
God is greatly feared in the council of the holy ones,
more awe-inspiring than[b] all who surround him.(D)
Lord God of Armies,
who is strong like you, Lord?(E)
Your faithfulness surrounds you.
You rule the raging sea;
when its waves surge, you still them.(F)
10 You crushed Rahab like one who is slain;(G)
you scattered your enemies with your powerful arm.(H)
11 The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours.
The world and everything in it—you founded them.(I)
12 North and south—you created them.(J)
Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at your name.(K)
13 You have a mighty arm;
your hand is powerful;
your right hand is lifted high.(L)
14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation
of your throne;(M)
faithful love and truth go before you.(N)
15 Happy are the people who know the joyful shout;(O)
Lord, they walk in the light from your face.(P)
16 They rejoice in your name all day long,
and they are exalted by your righteousness.(Q)
17 For you are their magnificent strength;(R)
by your favor our horn is exalted.(S)
18 Surely our shield[c] belongs to the Lord,
our king to the Holy One of Israel.(T)

19 You once spoke in a vision to your faithful ones
and said, “I have granted help to a warrior;
I have exalted one chosen[d] from the people.(U)
20 I have found David my servant;
I have anointed him with my sacred oil.(V)
21 My hand will always be with him,
and my arm will strengthen him.(W)
22 The enemy will not oppress[e] him;
the wicked will not afflict him.(X)
23 I will crush his foes before him
and strike those who hate him.(Y)
24 My faithfulness and love will be with him,
and through my name
his horn will be exalted.(Z)
25 I will extend his power to the sea
and his right hand to the rivers.(AA)
26 He will call to me, ‘You are my Father,(AB)
my God, the rock of my salvation.’(AC)
27 I will also make him my firstborn,
greatest of the kings of the earth.(AD)
28 I will always preserve my faithful love for him,
and my covenant with him will endure.(AE)
29 I will establish his line forever,
his throne as long as heaven lasts.[f](AF)
30 If his sons abandon my instruction
and do not live by my ordinances,(AG)
31 if they dishonor my statutes
and do not keep my commands,(AH)
32 then I will call their rebellion
to account with the rod,
their iniquity with blows.(AI)
33 But I will not withdraw
my faithful love from him
or betray my faithfulness.(AJ)
34 I will not violate my covenant
or change what my lips have said.(AK)
35 Once and for all
I have sworn an oath by my holiness;
I will not lie to David.(AL)
36 His offspring will continue forever,
his throne like the sun before me,(AM)
37 like the moon, established forever,
a faithful witness in the sky.”(AN)Selah

Jeremiah 1:4-10

The Call of Jeremiah

The word of the Lord came to me:

I chose you before I formed you in the womb;
I set you apart before you were born.(A)
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.(B)

But I protested, “Oh no, Lord God! Look, I don’t know how to speak(C) since I am only a youth.”(D)

Then the Lord said to me:

Do not say, “I am only a youth,”(E)
for you will go to everyone I send you to
and speak whatever I tell you.(F)
Do not be afraid of anyone,(G)
for I will be with you to rescue you.(H)
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Then the Lord reached out his hand, touched my mouth,(I) and told me:

I have now filled your mouth with my words.(J)
10 See, I have appointed you today
over nations and kingdoms
to uproot and tear down,
to destroy and demolish,(K)
to build and plant.(L)

Acts 8:4-13

Philip in Samaria

So those who were scattered went on their way preaching the word. Philip went down to a[a] city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them.(A) The crowds were all paying attention to what Philip said, as they listened and saw the signs he was performing. For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.(B) So there was great joy in that city.

The Response of Simon

A man named Simon had previously practiced sorcery in that city and amazed the Samaritan people, while claiming to be somebody great.(C) 10 They all paid attention to him, from the least of them to the greatest, and they said, “This man is called the Great Power of God.”[b](D) 11 They were attentive to him because he had amazed them with his sorceries for a long time. 12 But when they believed Philip, as he proclaimed the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.(E) 13 Even Simon himself believed. And after he was baptized, he followed Philip everywhere and was amazed as he observed the signs and great miracles(F) that were being performed.
