Psalm 76

Praise to God for His Rescue of Israel

For the music director, with stringed instruments.

A psalm of Asaph. A song.[a]

76 God is known in Judah.
His name is great in Israel.
His den[b] has been in Salem,
his lair[c] in Zion.
There he broke the flames of the bow,
the shield and sword and battle. Selah
Radiant[d] you are, majestic,
from[e] the mountains of prey.
The stouthearted are plundered;
they sleep their sleep,
and all the able men cannot use[f] their hands.
At your rebuke, O God of Jacob,
both rider[g] and horse slumber.
You, indeed, are to be feared,[h]
and who can stand before you
when you are angry? [i]
From heaven you proclaimed judgment.
The earth feared and was still
when God rose for justice,
to save all the afflicted of the land. Selah
10 For the anger of humankind will praise you.
You will put on the remnant of anger.[j]
11 Make vows and fulfill them to Yahweh, your God;
let all surrounding him
bring tribute to the one to be feared.[k]
12 He cuts off the spirit of leaders.
He is to be feared by the kings of the earth.

Isaiah 66:14-24

Yahweh’s Final Judgment

14 And you shall see and your heart shall rejoice,
    and your bones shall flourish[a] like the grass,
and the hand of Yahweh shall make itself known to[b] his servants,
    and he shall curse his enemies.
15 For look! Yahweh will come in fire,
    and his chariots like the storm wind,
to give back[c] his anger in wrath,
    and his rebuke in flames of fire.
16 For Yahweh enters into judgment on all flesh with fire and his sword,
    and those slain by[d] Yahweh shall be many.
17 Those who sanctify themselves
    and those who cleanse themselves to go into[e] the gardens after the one in the middle,
eating the flesh of swine
    and detestable things[f] and rodents[g] together

shall come to an end!” declares[h] Yahweh.

18 “And I—their works and thoughts!—am about to come to gather all nations and tongues,
    and they shall come and see my glory.
19 And I will set a sign among them,
    and I will send survivors from them to the nations:
Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow;
    Tubal and Javan, the faraway coastlands
that have not heard of my fame,
    and have not seen my glory.

And they shall declare my glory among the nations, 20 and bring all your countrymen[i] from all the nations as an offering to Yahweh on horses and chariots[j] and in litters and on mules and camels, to[k] my holy mountain,[l] Jerusalem,” says Yahweh, “just as the sons of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel to the house of Yahweh. 21 And indeed, I will take some of them as priests and the Levites,” says Yahweh. 22 “For just as the new heavens and earth that I am about to make shall stand before me,” declares[m] Yahweh, “so shall your descendants[n] and your name stand.

23 And this shall happen: From new moon to new moon[o] and from Sabbath to Sabbath[p] all flesh shall come to bow in worship before me,” says Yahweh. 24 “And they shall go out and look at the corpses of the people[q] who have rebelled[r] against me,

for their worm shall not die,
    and their fire shall not be quenched,
        and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Matthew 23:37-24:14

The Lament over Jerusalem

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wanted to gather your children together the way[a] a hen gathers her young together under her[b] wings, and you were not willing! 38 Behold, your house has been left to you desolate! 39 For I tell you, you will never see me from now on until you say,

‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’”[c]

The Destruction of the Temple Predicted

24 And as Jesus went out of the temple courts[d] he was going along, and his disciples came up to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered and[e] said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone will be left here on another stone that will not be thrown down!”

Signs of the End of the Age

And as[f] he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came up to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered and[g] said to them, “Watch out that no one deceives you! For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will deceive many. And you are going to hear about wars and rumors of wars. See to it that you are not alarmed, for this must happen, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise up against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.[h] But all these things are the beginning of birth pains.

Persecution of Disciples Predicted

“Then they will hand you over to persecution and will kill you, and you will be hated by all the nations[i] because of my name. 10 And then many will be led into sin and will betray one another and will hate one another, 11 and many false prophets will appear and will deceive many, 12 and because lawlessness will increase, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end—this person will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed in the whole inhabited earth for a testimony to all the nations,[j] and then the end will come.
