Psalm 51:1-10

A Prayer for Forgiveness

For the director of music. A psalm of David when the prophet Nathan came to David after ·David’s sin with Bathsheba [he committed adultery with/L had gone to Bathsheba; 2 Sam. 11:1—12:25].

51 God, be ·merciful [gracious] to me
    ·because you are loving [according to your love/loyalty].
·Because you are always ready to be merciful [According to your abundant compassion],
    ·wipe [blot] out all my ·wrongs [transgressions].
Wash ·away [L me thoroughly from] all my guilt
    and make me clean ·again [L from my sin].

I know about my ·wrongs [transgressions],
    and ·I can’t forget my sin [L my sin is continually before me].
You ·are the only one [alone] I have sinned against;
    I have done ·what you say is wrong [L evil in your eyes].
You are ·right [vindicated] when you speak
    and ·fair [pure; blameless] when you judge.
I was ·brought into this world [born] in ·sin [guilt].
    In sin my mother ·gave birth to [conceived] me [Rom. 3:9–20; 7:18].

You ·want me to be completely truthful [L desire truth/faithfulness in my inward parts],
    ·so teach me wisdom [L and secretly you make me know wisdom].
·Take away my sin [L Remove my sin with hyssop; Ex. 12:22; C a plant used in purification rituals; Lev. 14:4, 6, 49–51; Num. 19:18], and I will be clean.
    Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow [Is. 1:18].
Make me hear sounds of joy and gladness;
    let the bones you crushed ·be happy [rejoice] again.
·Turn [L Hide] your face from my sins
    and ·wipe [blot] out all my guilt.

10 Create in me a ·pure [clean] heart, God,
    and ·make my spirit right again [L renew a right/steadfast spirit in me].

Genesis 6:1-6

The Human Race Grows More Evil

The number of people on earth began to ·grow [multiply], and daughters were born to them. When the ·sons of God [C may refer to godly men among Seth’s descendants (ch. 5), or noble men, or angels] saw that ·these girls [L the daughters of men/human beings; C either evil women among Cain’s descendants (4:17–24), poor women, or simply mortal women] were beautiful, they married any of them they chose [C though their identity is unclear, their marriage clearly violated a boundary]. The Lord said, “My Spirit will not ·remain in [or contend with] human beings forever, because they are ·flesh [mortal]. ·They will live [L Their days will be] only 120 years.”

The ·Nephilim [L fallen ones; C the significance of the name is unclear] were on the earth in those days and also later. That was when the sons of God ·had sexual relations with [L came in to] the daughters of ·human beings [T man; C Hebrew: Adam; 1:27–28]. These women gave birth to children ·who became famous [L men of a name] and were the mighty warriors of long ago. [C The Nephilim of Num. 13:31–33, though not related genealogically, were giants, suggesting these pre-flood Nephilim were also.]

The Lord saw that the human beings on the earth were very ·wicked [evil] and that ·everything they thought about [L every inclination of their mind/heart] was ·evil [wicked]. He ·was sorry [regretted] he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.

1 Timothy 1:1-11

From Paul, an ·apostle [messenger] of Christ Jesus, by the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope.

To Timothy [Acts 16:1–5; 1 Cor. 16:10–11; Phil. 2:19–24], a ·true [genuine] child to me ·because you believe [or in the faith]:

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Warning Against False Teaching

I ·asked [urged; encouraged] you to stay longer in Ephesus [C a major port city in the Roman province of Asia, present-day western Turkey; Acts 19] when I went into Macedonia [C a Roman province in present-day northern Greece] so you could ·command [charge; instruct] some people there ·to stop teaching [or not to teach] ·false things [L different doctrine/teachings; C different from Paul’s Gospel, and so false]. Tell them not to ·spend their time on [occupy themselves with; devote themselves to] ·stories that are not true [myths] and ·on long lists of names in family histories [endless/useless genealogies; Titus 3:9]. These things only bring ·arguments [controversy; or useless speculation]; they do not help God’s ·work [plan; redemptive purpose], which ·is done in [or operates by; or is received by; or is known by] faith. The ·purpose [goal; aim] of this ·command [charge; instruction] is for people to have love, a love that comes from a pure heart and a ·good [clear] conscience and a ·true [genuine; sincere] faith. Some people have ·missed [departed/deviated from] these things and turned to ·useless talk [empty/meaningless/foolish discussion]. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand either what they are talking about or what they ·are sure about [so confidently assert].

But we know that the law [C the OT law of Moses] is good if someone uses it ·lawfully [legitimately; as God intended]. ·We also know [or …recognizing this:] that the law is not ·made [intended; laid down] for ·good people [L the just/righteous person] but for those who are ·against the law [lawbreakers; lawless] and for ·those who refuse to follow it [rebels; criminals]. It is for people who are ·against God [godless; ungodly] and are sinful, who are unholy and ·ungodly [irreverent; profane], who ·kill [or strike] their fathers and mothers, who murder, 10 who take part in sexual sins, who ·have sexual relations with people of the same sex [are practicing homosexuals], who ·sell slaves [are kidnappers/slave traders], who tell lies, who speak falsely, and ·who do anything against [or all who live contrary to] the true teaching of God. 11 That teaching ·is part of [accords with; conforms to] the ·Good News [Gospel] of the blessed God that he ·gave me to tell [entrusted to me].
