Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 25[a]
By David.
25 O Lord, I come before you in prayer.[b]
2 My God, I trust in you.
Please do not let me be humiliated;
do not let my enemies triumphantly rejoice over me.
3 Certainly none who rely on you will be humiliated.
Those who deal in treachery will be thwarted[c] and humiliated.
4 Make me understand your ways, O Lord.
Teach me your paths.[d]
5 Guide me into your truth[e] and teach me.
For you are the God who delivers me;
on you I rely all day long.
6 Remember[f] your compassionate and faithful deeds, O Lord,
for you have always acted in this manner.[g]
7 Do not hold against me[h] the sins of my youth[i] or my rebellious acts.
Because you are faithful to me, extend to me your favor, O Lord.[j]
8 The Lord is both kind and fair;[k]
that is why he teaches sinners the right way to live.[l]
9 May he show[m] the humble what is right.[n]
May he teach[o] the humble his way.
10 The Lord always proves faithful and reliable[p]
to those who follow the demands of his covenant.[q]
26 “Nonetheless they grew disobedient and rebelled against you; they disregarded your law.[a] They killed your prophets who had solemnly admonished them in order to cause them to return to you. They committed atrocious blasphemies. 27 Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who oppressed them. But in the time of their distress they called to you, and you heard from heaven. In your abundant compassion you provided them with deliverers to rescue them from[b] their adversaries.
28 “Then, when they were at rest again, they went back to doing evil before you. Then you abandoned them to[c] their enemies, and they gained dominion over them. When they again cried out to you, in your compassion you heard from heaven and rescued them time and again. 29 And you solemnly admonished them in order to return them to your law, but they behaved presumptuously and did not obey your commandments. They sinned against your ordinances—those by which an individual, if he obeys them,[d] will live. They boldly turned from you;[e] they rebelled[f] and did not obey. 30 You prolonged your kindness[g] with them for many years, and you solemnly admonished them by your Spirit through your prophets. Still they paid no attention,[h] so you delivered them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.[i] 31 However, due to your abundant mercy you did not do away with them altogether; you did not abandon them. For you are a merciful and compassionate God.
The Desolation of Jerusalem
20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded[a] by armies, then know that its[b] desolation[c] has come near. 21 Then those who are in Judea must flee[d] to the mountains. Those[e] who are inside the city must depart. Those[f] who are out in the country must not enter it, 22 because these are days of vengeance,[g] to fulfill[h] all that is written. 23 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! For there will be great distress[i] on the earth and wrath against this people. 24 They[j] will fall by the edge[k] of the sword and be led away as captives[l] among all nations. Jerusalem[m] will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.[n]
