Version
Psalm 92:1-4

Psalm 92[a]

A psalm; a song for the Sabbath day.

92 It is fitting[b] to thank the Lord,
and to sing praises to your name, O Most High.[c]
It is fitting[d] to proclaim your loyal love in the morning,
and your faithfulness during the night,
to the accompaniment of a ten-stringed instrument and a lyre,
to the accompaniment of the meditative tone of the harp.
For you, O Lord, have made me happy by your work.
I will sing for joy because of what you have done.[e]

Psalm 92:12-15

12 The godly[a] grow like a palm tree;
they grow high like a cedar in Lebanon.[b]
13 Planted in the Lord’s house,
they grow in the courts of our God.
14 They bear fruit even when they are old;
they are filled with vitality and have many leaves.[c]
15 So they proclaim that the Lord, my Protector,
is just and never unfair.[d]

1 Kings 10:26-11:8

26 Solomon accumulated[a] chariots and horses. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses. He kept them in assigned cities and in Jerusalem.[b] 27 The king made silver as plentiful[c] in Jerusalem as stones; cedar was[d] as plentiful as sycamore fig trees are in the foothills.[e] 28 Solomon acquired his horses from Egypt[f] and from Que; the king’s traders purchased them from Que. 29 They paid 600 silver pieces for each chariot from Egypt and 150 silver pieces for each horse. They also sold chariots and horses to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of Syria.[g]

The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

11 King Solomon fell in love with many foreign women (besides Pharaoh’s daughter), including Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites. They came from nations about which the Lord had warned the Israelites, “You must not establish friendly relations with them![h] If you do, they will surely shift your allegiance to their gods.”[i] But Solomon was irresistibly attracted to them.[j]

He had 700 royal wives[k] and 300 concubines;[l] his wives had a powerful influence over him.[m] When Solomon became old, his wives shifted his allegiance to[n] other gods; he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God, as his father David had been.[o] Solomon worshiped[p] the Sidonian goddess Astarte and the detestable Ammonite god Milcom.[q] Solomon did evil in the Lord’s sight;[r] he did not remain loyal to[s] the Lord, as his father David had. Furthermore,[t] on the hill east of Jerusalem[u] Solomon built a high place[v] for the detestable Moabite god Chemosh[w] and for the detestable Ammonite god Milcom.[x] He built high places for all his foreign wives so they could burn incense and make sacrifices to their gods.[y]

Hebrews 11:4-7

By faith Abel offered God a greater sacrifice than Cain, and through his faith[a] he was commended as righteous, because God commended him for his offerings. And through his faith[b] he still speaks, though he is dead. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death, and he was not to be found because God took him up. For before his removal he had been commended as having pleased God. Now without faith it is impossible to please him, for the one who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. By faith Noah, when he was warned about things not yet seen, with reverent regard[c] constructed an ark for the deliverance of his family. Through faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
