Psalm 80[a]

Prayer to Restore God’s Vineyard

For the leader; according to “Lilies.” Eduth.[b] A psalm of Asaph.

I

O Shepherd of Israel, lend an ear,
    you who guide Joseph like a flock!
Seated upon the cherubim, shine forth(A)
    upon Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh.
Stir up your power, and come to save us.
    (B)O God, restore us;
    light up your face and we shall be saved.

II

Lord of hosts,
    how long will you smolder in anger
    while your people pray?(C)
You have fed them the bread of tears,
    made them drink tears in great measure.[c](D)
You have left us to be fought over by our neighbors;
    our enemies deride us.(E)
O God of hosts, restore us;
    light up your face and we shall be saved.

III

You brought a vine[d] out of Egypt;
    you drove out nations and planted it.
10 You cleared out what was before it;
    it took deep root and filled the land.
11 The mountains were covered by its shadow,
    the cedars of God by its branches.
12 It sent out its boughs as far as the sea,[e]
    its shoots as far as the river.
13 Why have you broken down its walls,
    so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?(F)
14 The boar from the forest strips the vine;
    the beast of the field feeds upon it.(G)
15 Turn back again, God of hosts;
    look down from heaven and see;
Visit this vine,
16     the stock your right hand has planted,
    and the son[f] whom you made strong for yourself.
17 Those who would burn or cut it down—
    may they perish at your rebuke.
18 May your hand be with the man on your right,[g]
    with the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.
19 Then we will not withdraw from you;
    revive us, and we will call on your name.
20 Lord God of hosts, restore us;
    light up your face and we shall be saved.

Isaiah 5:1-7

Chapter 5

The Song of the Vineyard[a]

Now let me sing of my friend,
    my beloved’s song about his vineyard.
My friend had a vineyard
    on a fertile hillside;
He spaded it, cleared it of stones,
    and planted the choicest vines;
Within it he built a watchtower,
    and hewed out a wine press.
Then he waited for the crop of grapes,
    but it yielded rotten grapes.(A)
Now, inhabitants of Jerusalem, people of Judah,
    judge between me and my vineyard:
What more could be done for my vineyard
    that I did not do?(B)
Why, when I waited for the crop of grapes,
    did it yield rotten grapes?
Now, I will let you know
    what I am going to do to my vineyard:
Take away its hedge, give it to grazing,
    break through its wall, let it be trampled![b]
Yes, I will make it a ruin:
    it shall not be pruned or hoed,
    but will be overgrown with thorns and briers;
I will command the clouds
    not to rain upon it.
The vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel,
    the people of Judah, his cherished plant;
He waited for judgment, but see, bloodshed!
    for justice, but hark, the outcry![c]

Galatians 5:16-26

16 (A)I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh.[a] 17 For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want.(B) 18 But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.(C) 19 [b]Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness,(D) 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions,(E) 21 occasions of envy,[c] drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,(F) 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.(G) 24 Now those who belong to Christ [Jesus] have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.(H) 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.(I) 26 Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another.(J)
