Psalm 107:1-16

Fifth Book—Psalms 107–150

Psalm 107[a]

God the Savior of Those in Distress

“Give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
    his mercy endures forever!”(A)
Let that be the prayer of the Lord’s redeemed,
    those redeemed from the hand of the foe,(B)
Those gathered from foreign lands,
    from east and west, from north and south.(C)

I

Some had lost their way in a barren desert;
    found no path toward a city to live in.
They were hungry and thirsty;
    their life was ebbing away.(D)
In their distress they cried to the Lord,
    who rescued them in their peril,
(E)Guided them by a direct path
    so they reached a city to live in.(F)
Let them thank the Lord for his mercy,
    such wondrous deeds for the children of Adam.
For he satisfied the thirsty,
    filled the hungry with good things.(G)

II

10 Some lived in darkness and gloom,
    imprisoned in misery and chains.
11 Because they rebelled against God’s word,
    and scorned the counsel of the Most High,(H)
12 He humbled their hearts through hardship;
    they stumbled with no one to help.(I)
13 In their distress they cried to the Lord,
    who saved them in their peril;
14 He brought them forth from darkness and the shadow of death
    and broke their chains asunder.(J)
15 Let them thank the Lord for his mercy,
    such wondrous deeds for the children of Adam.
16 For he broke down the gates of bronze
    and snapped the bars of iron.

Exodus 15:22-27

V. The Journey in the Wilderness to Sinai

At Marah and Elim. 22 (A)Then Moses led Israel forward from the Red Sea,[a] and they marched out to the wilderness of Shur. After traveling for three days through the wilderness without finding water, 23 they arrived at Marah, where they could not drink its water, because it was too bitter. Hence this place was called Marah. 24 As the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” 25 he cried out to the Lord, who pointed out to him a piece of wood. When he threw it into the water, the water became fresh.(B)

It was here that God, in making statutes and ordinances for them, put them to the test. 26 He said: If you listen closely to the voice of the Lord, your God, and do what is right in his eyes: if you heed his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will not afflict you with any of the diseases with which I afflicted the Egyptians;(C) for I, the Lord, am your healer.

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.(D)

Hebrews 3:1-6

III. Jesus, Faithful and Compassionate High Priest

Chapter 3

Jesus, Superior to Moses.[a] Therefore, holy “brothers,” sharing in a heavenly calling, reflect on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was “faithful in [all] his house.”(A) But he is worthy of more “glory” than Moses, as the founder of a house has more “honor” than the house itself.(B) Every house is founded by someone, but the founder of all is God. Moses was “faithful in all his house” as a “servant” to testify to what would be spoken, [b](C)but Christ was faithful as a son placed over his house. We are his house, if [only] we hold fast to our confidence and pride in our hope.
