Preamble. The Creation of the World

Chapter 1

The Story of Creation.[a] In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth(A) [b]and the earth was without form or shape, with darkness over the abyss and a mighty wind sweeping over the waters—(B)

Then God said: Let there be light, and there was light.(C) God saw that the light was good. God then separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” Evening came, and morning followed—the first day.[c]

Psalm 29

Psalm 29[a]

The Lord of Majesty Acclaimed as King of the World

A psalm of David.

I

Give to the Lord, you sons of God,[b]
    give to the Lord glory and might;
Give to the Lord the glory due his name.
    Bow down before the Lord’s holy splendor!(A)

II

The voice of the Lord[c] is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over the mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is power;
    the voice of the Lord is splendor.(B)
The voice of the Lord cracks the cedars;
    the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon,
Makes Lebanon leap like a calf,
    and Sirion[d] like a young bull.
The voice of the Lord strikes with fiery flame;
    the voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the desert of Kadesh.
[e]The voice of the Lord makes the deer dance
    and strips the forests bare.
    All in his Temple say, “Glory!”

III

10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood![f](C)
    The Lord reigns as king forever!
11 May the Lord give might to his people;[g]
    may the Lord bless his people with peace!(D)

Acts 19:1-7

Chapter 19

Paul in Ephesus. [a]While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior of the country and came [down] to Ephesus where he found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the holy Spirit when you became believers?” They answered him, “We have never even heard that there is a holy Spirit.” He said, “How were you baptized?” They replied, “With the baptism of John.” Paul then said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.”(A) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul laid [his] hands on them, the holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.(B) Altogether there were about twelve men.

Mark 1:4-11

John [the] Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist.[a] He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. [b](A)I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the holy Spirit.”

The Baptism of Jesus. (B)It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.[c] 11 (C)And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus.[d]
