Psalm 148[a]

All Creation Summoned to Praise

Hallelujah!

I

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights.
Praise him, all you his angels;
    give praise, all you his hosts.(A)
Praise him, sun and moon;
    praise him, all shining stars.
Praise him, highest heavens,[b]
    you waters above the heavens.
Let them all praise the Lord’s name;
    for he commanded and they were created,(B)
Assigned them their station forever,
    set an order that will never change.

II

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you sea monsters and all the deeps of the sea;(C)
Lightning and hail, snow and thick clouds,
    storm wind that fulfills his command;
Mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars;(D)
10 Animals wild and tame,
    creatures that crawl and birds that fly;(E)
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,
    princes and all who govern on earth;
12 Young men and women too,
    old and young alike.
13 Let them all praise the Lord’s name,
    for his name alone is exalted,
    His majesty above earth and heaven.(F)
14 [c]He has lifted high the horn of his people;
    to the praise of all his faithful,
    the Israelites, the people near to him.
Hallelujah!

Jeremiah 26:1-9

IV. The Temple Sermon

Chapter 26

Jeremiah Threatened with Death. In the beginning of the reign[a] of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: Thus says the Lord: Stand in the court of the house of the Lord and speak to the inhabitants of all the cities of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord; whatever I command you, tell them, and hold nothing back.(A) Perhaps they will listen and turn, all of them from their evil way, so that I may repent of the evil I plan to inflict upon them for their evil deeds.(B) Say to them: Thus says the Lord: If you do not obey me, by walking according to the law I set before you and listening to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I kept sending you, even though you do not listen to them,(C) I will treat this house like Shiloh, and make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.(D)

Now the priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. When Jeremiah finished speaking all that the Lord commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests, the prophets, and all the people laid hold of him, crying, “You must die! Why do you prophesy in the name of the Lord: ‘This house shall become like Shiloh,’ and ‘This city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

Jeremiah 26:12-15

12 Jeremiah said to the princes and all the people: “It was the Lord who sent me to prophesy against this house and city everything you have heard. 13 Now, therefore, reform your ways and your deeds; listen to the voice of the Lord your God, so that the Lord will have a change of heart regarding the evil he has spoken against you.(A) 14 As for me, I am in your hands; do with me what is good and right in your eyes. 15 But you should certainly know that by putting me to death, you bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city and its inhabitants. For in truth it was the Lord who sent me to you, to speak all these words for you to hear.”

Acts 6:8-15

Accusation Against Stephen. [a]Now Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people. Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen, 10 but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.(A) 11 Then they instigated some men to say, “We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.”(B) 12 They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin. 13 They presented false witnesses[b] who testified, “This man never stops saying things against [this] holy place and the law. 14 For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”(C) 15 All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

Acts 7:51-60

Conclusion. 51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always oppose the holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors. 52 Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.(A) 53 You received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it.”(B)

Stephen’s Martyrdom. 54 When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him. 55 (C)But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,[a] 56 and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears,[b] and rushed upon him together. 58 They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.(D) 59 As they were stoning Stephen,(E) he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”[c] 60 Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”; and when he said this, he fell asleep.(F)
