Chapter 7

The Oracle of Nathan. (A)After the king had taken up residence in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from his enemies on every side,(B) the king said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent!”(C) Nathan answered the king, “Whatever is in your heart, go and do, for the Lord is with you.”(D) But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell David my servant, Thus says the Lord: Is it you who would build me a house to dwell in?(E) I have never dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up from Egypt to this day, but I have been going about in a tent or a tabernacle. As long as I have wandered about among the Israelites, did I ever say a word to any of the judges whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel: Why have you not built me a house of cedar?

Now then, speak thus to my servant David, Thus says the Lord of hosts:[a] I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to become ruler over my people Israel.(F) I was with you wherever you went, and I cut down all your enemies before you. And I will make your name like that of the greatest on earth.(G) 10 I will assign a place for my people Israel and I will plant them in it to dwell there; they will never again be disturbed, nor shall the wicked ever again oppress them, as they did at the beginning, 11 and from the day when I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you:(H)

2 Samuel 7:16

16 Your house and your kingdom are firm forever before me; your throne shall be firmly established forever.[a](A)

47     my spirit rejoices in God my savior.(C)
48 For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;
    behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.(D)
49 The Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.(E)
50 His mercy is from age to age
    to those who fear him.(F)
51 He has shown might with his arm,
    dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.(G)
52 He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones
    but lifted up the lowly.(H)
53 The hungry he has filled with good things;
    the rich he has sent away empty.(I)
54 He has helped Israel his servant,
    remembering his mercy,(J)
55 according to his promise to our fathers,
    to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”(K)

I

I will sing of your mercy forever, Lord(A)
    proclaim your faithfulness through all ages.

    I have sworn to David my servant:

Psalm 89:19-26

20 Then you spoke in vision;(B)
    to your faithful ones you said:
“I have set a leader over the warriors;

21 I have chosen David, my servant;
    with my holy oil I have anointed him.
22 My hand will be with him;(C)
    my arm will make him strong.
23 No enemy shall outwit him,
    nor shall the wicked defeat him.
24 I will crush his foes before him,
    strike down those who hate him.

    through my name his horn will be exalted.
26 [a]I will set his hand upon the sea,
    his right hand upon the rivers.

Romans 16:25-27

[25 Now to him who can strengthen you, according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ,(A) according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages[a] 26 but now manifested through the prophetic writings and, according to the command of the eternal God, made known to all nations to bring about the obedience of faith,(B) 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ be glory forever and ever. Amen.](C)

Luke 1:26-38

26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.(A) 28 And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.”(B) 29 But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 (C)Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32 (D)He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,[a] and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”(E) 34 But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”[b] 35 And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.(F) 36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived[c] a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; 37 for nothing will be impossible for God.”(G) 38 Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
