Version
Psalm 1

Book 1 (Psalms 1-41)

Psalm 1[a]

How blessed[b] is the one[c] who does not follow[d] the advice[e] of the wicked,[f]
or stand in the pathway[g] with sinners,
or sit in the assembly[h] of scoffers.[i]
Instead[j] he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands;[k]
he meditates on[l] his commands[m] day and night.
He is like[n] a tree planted by flowing streams;[o]
it[p] yields[q] its fruit at the proper time,[r]
and its leaves never fall off.[s]
He succeeds in everything he attempts.[t]
Not so with the wicked!
Instead[u] they are like wind-driven chaff.[v]
For this reason[w] the wicked cannot withstand[x] judgment,[y]
nor can sinners join the assembly of the godly.[z]
Certainly[aa] the Lord guards the way of the godly,[ab]
but the way of the wicked ends in destruction.[ac]

Proverbs 24:23-34

Further Sayings of the Wise

23 These sayings also are from the wise:

To show partiality[a] in judgment is terrible:[b]
24 The one who says to the guilty,[c] “You are innocent,”[d]
peoples will curse him, and nations will denounce[e] him.
25 But there will be delight[f] for those who convict[g] the guilty,[h]
and a pleasing blessing[i] will come on them.
26 Like a kiss on the lips[j]
is the one who gives an honest answer.
27 Establish your work outside and get your fields ready;
afterward build[k] your house.[l]
28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause,[m]
and do not deceive with your words.[n]
29 Do not say, “I will do to him just as he has done to me;
I will pay him back[o] according to what he has done.”[p]
30 I passed by the field of a sluggard,
by the vineyard of one who lacks sense.[q]
31 I saw[r] that thorns had grown up all over it,
the ground[s] was covered with weeds,
and its stone wall was broken down.
32 Then I scrutinized[t] it. I was putting[u] my mind[v] to it—
I saw;[w] I took in a lesson:[x]
33 “A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to relax,
34 and your poverty will come like a bandit,
and your need like an armed robber.”[y]

John 5:39-47

39 You study the scriptures thoroughly[a] because you think in them you possess eternal life,[b] and it is these same scriptures[c] that testify about me, 40 but you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.

41 “I do not accept[d] praise[e] from people,[f] 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God[g] within you. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept[h] me. If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept[i] him. 44 How can you believe, if you accept praise[j] from one another and don’t seek the praise[k] that comes from the only God?[l]

45 “Do not suppose that I will accuse you before the Father. The one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope.[m] 46 If[n] you believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me. 47 But if you do not believe what Moses[o] wrote, how will you believe my words?”
