Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 17[a]
A prayer of David.
17 Lord, consider my just cause.[b]
Pay attention to my cry for help.
Listen to the prayer
I sincerely offer.[c]
2 Make a just decision on my behalf.[d]
Decide what is right.[e]
3 You have scrutinized my inner motives;[f]
you have examined me during the night.[g]
You have carefully evaluated me, but you find no sin.
I am determined I will say nothing sinful.[h]
4 As for the actions of people[i]—
just as you have commanded,
I have not followed in the footsteps of violent men.[j]
5 I carefully obey your commands;[k]
I do not deviate from them.[l]
6 I call to you because you will answer me, O God.
Listen to me![m]
Hear what I say![n]
7 Accomplish awesome, faithful deeds,[o]
you who powerfully deliver those who look to you for protection from their enemies.[p]
8 Protect me as you would protect the pupil of your eye.[q]
Hide me in the shadow of your wings.[r]
9 Protect me from[s] the wicked men who attack[t] me,
my enemies who crowd around me for the kill.[u]
10 They are calloused;[v]
they speak arrogantly.[w]
11 They attack me, now they surround me;[x]
they intend to throw me to the ground.[y]
12 He[z] is like a lion[aa] that wants to tear its prey to bits,[ab]
like a young lion crouching[ac] in hidden places.
13 Rise up, Lord!
Confront him.[ad] Knock him down.[ae]
Use your sword to rescue me from the wicked man.[af]
14 Lord, use your power to deliver me from these murderers,[ag]
from the murderers of this world.[ah]
They enjoy prosperity;[ai]
you overwhelm them with the riches they desire.[aj]
They have many children,
and leave their wealth to their offspring.[ak]
15 As for me, because I am innocent I will see your face;[al]
when I awake you will reveal yourself to me.[am]
Individuals Are Challenged to Put Their Trust in the Lord[a]
5 The Lord says,
“I will put a curse on people
who trust in mere human beings,
who depend on mere flesh and blood for their strength,[b]
and whose hearts[c] have turned away from the Lord.
6 They will be like a shrub[d] in the arid rift valley.[e]
They will not experience good things even when they happen.
It will be as though they were growing in the stony wastes in the wilderness,[f]
in a salt land where no one can live.
7 My blessing is on those people who trust in me,
who put their confidence in me.[g]
8 They will be like a tree planted near a stream
whose roots spread out toward the water.
It has nothing to fear when the heat comes.
Its leaves are always green.
It has no need to be concerned in a year of drought.
It does not stop bearing fruit.
9 The human mind is more deceitful than anything else.
It is incurably bad.[h] Who can understand it?
10 I, the Lord, probe into people’s minds.
I examine people’s hearts.[i]
I deal with each person according to how he has behaved.
I give them what they deserve based on what they have done.
11 The person who gathers wealth by unjust means
is like the partridge that broods over eggs but does not hatch them.[j]
Before his life is half over he will lose his ill-gotten gains.[k]
At the end of his life it will be clear he was a fool.”[l]
Jeremiah Appeals to the Lord for Vindication
12 Then I said,[m]
“Lord, from the very beginning
you have been seated on your glorious throne on high.
You are the place where we can find refuge.
13 You are the one in whom Israel may find hope.[n]
All who leave you will suffer shame.
Those who turn away from you[o] will be consigned to the netherworld.[p]
For they have rejected you, the Lord, the fountain of life.[q]
14 Lord, grant me relief from my suffering
so that I may have some relief;
rescue me from those who persecute me
so that I may be rescued,[r] for you give me reason to praise![s]
15 Listen[t] to what they are saying to me,
‘Where are the things the Lord threatens us with?
May it please happen!’
[u]
16 But I have not pestered you to bring disaster.[v]
I have not desired the time of irreparable devastation.[w]
You know that.
You are fully aware of every word that I have spoken.[x]
17 Do not cause me dismay![y]
You are my source of safety in times of trouble.
18 May those who persecute me be disgraced.
Do not let me be disgraced.
May they be dismayed.
Do not let me be dismayed.
Bring days of disaster on them.
Bring on them the destruction they deserve.”[z]
Jesus and Beelzebul
22 Then they brought to him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute. Jesus[a] healed him so that he could speak and see.[b] 23 All the crowds were amazed and said, “Could this one be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees[c] heard this they said, “He does not cast out demons except by the power of Beelzebul,[d] the ruler[e] of demons!” 25 Now when Jesus[f] realized what they were thinking, he said to them,[g] “Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed,[h] and no town or house divided against itself will stand. 26 So if[i] Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons[j] cast them[k] out? For this reason they will be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God[l] has already overtaken[m] you. 29 How[n] else can someone enter a strong man’s[o] house and steal his property, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can thoroughly plunder the house.[p] 30 Whoever is not with me is against me,[q] and whoever does not gather with me scatters.[r] 31 For this reason I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy,[s] but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven.[t] But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven,[u] either in this age or in the age to come.
