Psalm 138[a]

Hymn of a Grateful Heart

Of David.

I

I thank you, Lord, with all my heart;(A)
    in the presence of the angels[b] to you I sing.
I bow low toward your holy temple;
    I praise your name for your mercy and faithfulness.
For you have exalted over all
    your name and your promise.
On the day I cried out, you answered;
    you strengthened my spirit.

II

All the kings of earth will praise you, Lord,
    when they hear the words of your mouth.
They will sing of the ways of the Lord:
    “How great is the glory of the Lord!”
The Lord is on high, but cares for the lowly(B)
    and knows the proud from afar.
Though I walk in the midst of dangers,
    you guard my life when my enemies rage.
You stretch out your hand;
    your right hand saves me.
The Lord is with me to the end.
    Lord, your mercy endures forever.
    Never forsake the work of your hands!

Ezekiel 28:11-19

11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 Son of man, raise a lament over the king of Tyre, and say to him: Thus says the Lord God:

[a] You were a seal of perfection,
    full of wisdom, perfect in beauty.(A)
13 In Eden, the garden of God, you lived;
    precious stones of every kind were your covering:
Carnelian, topaz, and beryl,
    chrysolite, onyx, and jasper,
    sapphire, garnet, and emerald.
Their mounts and settings
    were wrought in gold,
    fashioned for you the day you were created.(B)
14 With a cherub I placed you;
    I put you on the holy mountain of God,[b]
    where you walked among fiery stones.
15 Blameless were you in your ways
    from the day you were created,
Until evil was found in you.
16     Your commerce was full of lawlessness, and you sinned.
Therefore I banished you from the mountain of God;
    the cherub drove you out
    from among the fiery stones.(C)
17 Your heart had grown haughty
    because of your beauty;
You corrupted your wisdom
    because of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground,
    I made you a spectacle
    in the sight of kings.(D)
18 Because of the enormity of your guilt,
    and the perversity of your trade,
    you defiled your sanctuary.
I brought fire out of you;
    it devoured you;
I made you ashes on the ground
    in the eyes of all who see you.(E)
19 All the nations who knew you
    are appalled on account of you;
You have become a horror,
    never to be again.(F)

1 Corinthians 6:1-11

Chapter 6

Lawsuits Before Unbelievers.[a] How can any one of you with a case against another dare to bring it to the unjust for judgment instead of to the holy ones? [b]Do you not know that the holy ones will judge the world? If the world is to be judged by you, are you unqualified for the lowest law courts?(A) Do you not know that we will judge angels? Then why not everyday matters? If, therefore, you have courts for everyday matters, do you seat as judges people of no standing in the church? I say this to shame you. Can it be that there is not one among you wise enough to be able to settle a case between brothers? But rather brother goes to court against brother, and that before unbelievers?

Now indeed [then] it is, in any case, a failure on your part that you have lawsuits against one another. Why not rather put up with injustice? Why not rather let yourselves be cheated?(B) Instead, you inflict injustice and cheat, and this to brothers. [c]Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes[d] nor sodomites(C) 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 That is what some of you used to be; but now you have had yourselves washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.(D)
