David’s Charge to Solomon^(A)

2 Now it was coming close to the day of David’s death, and he gave his son Solomon a charge, saying:

² “I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself to be a man. ³ And keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in His ways, keeping His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, ⁴ that the Lord may carry out His word that He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your children take heed to their way, to walk before Me in faithfulness with all their hearts and with all their souls, you shall not fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’

The Demand for a Sign^(A)

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from You.”

³⁹ But He answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. ⁴⁰ For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish,^[a] so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. ⁴¹ The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and will condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah.^[b] And now One greater than Jonah is here. ⁴² The Queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and will condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And now One greater than Solomon is here.
