Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
7 Let those who wait in hope for you, Lord of hosts,
not be shamed because of me.
Let those who seek you, God of Israel,(A)
not be disgraced because of me.
8 For it is on your account I bear insult,
that disgrace covers my face.(B)
9 I have become an outcast to my kindred,
a stranger to my mother’s children.(C)
10 Because zeal for your house has consumed me,[a]
I am scorned by those who scorn you.(D)
11 When I humbled my spirit with fasting,(A)
this led only to scorn.
12 When I clothed myself in sackcloth;
I became a byword for them.
13 Those who sit in the gate gossip about me;
drunkards make me the butt of songs.
III
16 Do not let the flood waters overwhelm me,
nor the deep swallow me,
nor the pit close its mouth over me.
17 Answer me, Lord, in your generous love;
in your great mercy turn to me.
18 Do not hide your face from your servant;
hasten to answer me, for I am in distress.(A)
Chapter 20
1 Now the priest Pashhur,(A) son of Immer, chief officer in the house of the Lord,[a] heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2 So he struck the prophet and put him in the stocks at the upper Gate of Benjamin in the house of the Lord.(B) 3 The next morning, after Pashhur had released Jeremiah from the stocks, the prophet said to him:(C) “Instead of Pashhur, the Lord names you ‘Terror on every side.’[b] 4 For thus says the Lord: Indeed, I will hand you over to terror, you and all your friends. Your own eyes shall see them fall by the sword of their enemies. All Judah I will hand over to the power of the king of Babylon,[c] who shall take them captive to Babylon or strike them down with the sword. 5 All the wealth of this city, all its resources and its valuables, all the treasures of the kings of Judah, I will hand over to their enemies, who will plunder it and carry it away to Babylon.(D) 6 You, Pashhur, and all the members of your household shall go into exile. To Babylon you shall go; there you shall die and be buried, you and all your friends, because you have prophesied lies to them.”(E)
53 When he left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things,(A) 54 for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.(B)
Chapter 12
The Leaven of the Pharisees.[a] 1 Meanwhile, so many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot.(C) He began to speak, first to his disciples, “Beware of the leaven—that is, the hypocrisy—of the Pharisees.
Courage Under Persecution.[b] 2 (D)“There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known.(E) 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops.
