Psalm 27:7-14

B

I

Hear my voice, Lord, when I call;
    have mercy on me and answer me.
“Come,” says my heart, “seek his face”;[a]
    your face, Lord, do I seek!(A)
Do not hide your face from me;
    do not repel your servant in anger.
You are my salvation; do not cast me off;
    do not forsake me, God my savior!
10 Even if my father and mother forsake me,
    the Lord will take me in.(B)

II

11 Lord, show me your way;
    lead me on a level path
    because of my enemies.(C)
12 Do not abandon me to the desire of my foes;
    malicious and lying witnesses have risen against me.
13 I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness
    in the land of the living.[b](D)
14 Wait for the Lord, take courage;
    be stouthearted, wait for the Lord!

Genesis 49:1-2

Chapter 49

Jacob’s Testament.[a] Jacob called his sons and said: “Gather around, that I may tell you what is to happen to you in days to come.

“Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob,
    listen to Israel, your father.

Genesis 49:8-13

“You, Judah, shall your brothers praise
    —your hand on the neck of your enemies;
    the sons of your father shall bow down to you.
Judah is a lion’s cub,
    you have grown up on prey, my son.
He crouches, lies down like a lion,
    like a lioness—who would dare rouse him?(A)
10 The scepter shall never depart from Judah,
    or the mace from between his feet,
Until tribute comes to him,[a]
    and he receives the people’s obedience.
11 He tethers his donkey to the vine,
    his donkey’s foal to the choicest stem.
In wine he washes his garments,
    his robe in the blood of grapes.[b]
12 His eyes are darker than wine,
    and his teeth are whiter than milk.

13 “Zebulun shall dwell by the seashore;
    he will be a haven for ships,
    and his flank shall rest on Sidon.

Genesis 49:21-26

21 “Naphtali is a hind let loose,
    which brings forth lovely fawns.

22 “Joseph is a wild colt,
    a wild colt by a spring,
    wild colts on a hillside.
23 Harrying him and shooting,
    the archers opposed him;
24 But his bow remained taut,
    and his arms were nimble,
By the power of the Mighty One of Jacob,
    because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
25 The God of your father, who helps you,[a]
    God Almighty, who blesses you,
With the blessings of the heavens above,
    the blessings of the abyss that crouches below,
The blessings of breasts and womb,
26     the blessings of fresh grain and blossoms,
    the blessings of the everlasting mountains,
    the delights of the eternal hills.
May they rest on the head of Joseph,
    on the brow of the prince among his brothers.

Luke 1:67-79

The Canticle of Zechariah. 67 Then Zechariah his father, filled with the holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:

68 [a]“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    for he has visited and brought redemption to his people.(A)
69 [b]He has raised up a horn for our salvation
    within the house of David his servant,(B)
70 even as he promised through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old:
71     salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,(C)
72 to show mercy to our fathers(D)
    and to be mindful of his holy covenant(E)
73 and of the oath he swore to Abraham our father,(F)
    and to grant us that, 74 rescued from the hand of enemies,
without fear we might worship him 75 in holiness and righteousness
    before him all our days.(G)
76 And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High,
    for you will go before the Lord[c] to prepare his ways,(H)
77 to give his people knowledge of salvation
    through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God(I)
    by which the daybreak from on high[d] will visit us(J)
79 to shine on those who sit in darkness and death’s shadow,
    to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
