Psalm 148

Psalm 148[a]

All Creation Summoned to Praise

Hallelujah!

I

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights.
Praise him, all you his angels;
    give praise, all you his hosts.(A)
Praise him, sun and moon;
    praise him, all shining stars.
Praise him, highest heavens,[b]
    you waters above the heavens.
Let them all praise the Lord’s name;
    for he commanded and they were created,(B)
Assigned them their station forever,
    set an order that will never change.

II

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you sea monsters and all the deeps of the sea;(C)
Lightning and hail, snow and thick clouds,
    storm wind that fulfills his command;
Mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars;(D)
10 Animals wild and tame,
    creatures that crawl and birds that fly;(E)
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,
    princes and all who govern on earth;
12 Young men and women too,
    old and young alike.
13 Let them all praise the Lord’s name,
    for his name alone is exalted,
    His majesty above earth and heaven.(F)
14 [c]He has lifted high the horn of his people;
    to the praise of all his faithful,
    the Israelites, the people near to him.
Hallelujah!

Proverbs 8:22-31

22 [a]“The Lord begot me, the beginning of his works,
    the forerunner of his deeds of long ago;(A)
23 From of old I was formed,[b]
    at the first, before the earth.(B)
24 [c]When there were no deeps I was brought forth,
    when there were no fountains or springs of water;
25 Before the mountains were settled into place,
    before the hills, I was brought forth;
26 When the earth and the fields were not yet made,
    nor the first clods of the world.
27 When he established the heavens, there was I,(C)
    when he marked out the vault over the face of the deep;
28 When he made firm the skies above,
    when he fixed fast the springs of the deep;
29 When he set for the sea its limit,
    so that the waters should not transgress his command;
When he fixed the foundations of earth,
30     then was I beside him as artisan;[d](D)
I was his delight day by day,
    playing before him all the while,
31 Playing over the whole of his earth,
    having my delight with human beings.

1 John 5:1-12

Chapter 5

Faith Is Victory over the World. [a]Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves [also] the one begotten by him.(A) In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,(B) for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.(C) Who [indeed] is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?(D)

This is the one who came through water and blood,[b] Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth.(E) So there are three that testify, the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord.(F) If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son.(G) 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son.(H) 11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.(I) 12 Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.
