Chapter 2

And Hannah prayed:[a]

“My heart exults in the Lord,
    my horn is exalted by my God.
I have swallowed up my enemies;
    I rejoice in your victory.(A)
There is no Holy One like the Lord;
    there is no Rock like our God.(B)
Speak boastfully no longer,
    Do not let arrogance issue from your mouths.[b]
For an all-knowing God is the Lord,
    a God who weighs actions.(C)

“The bows of the mighty are broken,
    while the tottering gird on strength.(D)
The well-fed hire themselves out for bread,
    while the hungry no longer have to toil.
The barren wife bears seven sons,
    while the mother of many languishes.(E)

“The Lord puts to death and gives life,
    casts down to Sheol and brings up again.(F)
The Lord makes poor and makes rich,
    humbles, and also exalts.
He raises the needy from the dust;
    from the ash heap lifts up the poor,
To seat them with nobles
    and make a glorious throne their heritage.

“For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
    and he has set the world upon them.(G)
He guards the footsteps of his faithful ones,
    but the wicked shall perish in the darkness;
    for not by strength does one prevail.
10 The Lord’s foes shall be shattered;
    the Most High in heaven thunders;
    the Lord judges the ends of the earth.
May he give strength to his king,
    and exalt the horn of his anointed!”(H)

Genesis 17:15-22

15 God further said to Abraham: As for Sarai your wife, do not call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.[a] 16 I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her. Her also will I bless; she will give rise to nations, and rulers of peoples will issue from her.(A) 17 Abraham fell face down and laughed[b] as he said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah give birth at ninety?”(B) 18 So Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael could live in your favor!” 19 God replied: Even so, your wife Sarah is to bear you a son, and you shall call him Isaac. It is with him that I will maintain my covenant as an everlasting covenant and with his descendants after him.(C) 20 Now as for Ishmael, I will heed you: I hereby bless him. I will make him fertile and will multiply him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve chieftains, and I will make of him a great nation.(D) 21 But my covenant I will maintain with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you by this time next year.(E) 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God departed from him.

Galatians 4:8-20

(A)At a time when you did not know God, you became slaves to things that by nature are not gods;[a] but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and destitute elemental powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again?(B) 10 You are observing days,(C) months, seasons, and years.[b] 11 I am afraid on your account that perhaps I have labored for you in vain.[c]

Appeal to Former Loyalty.[d] 12 I implore you, brothers, be as I am, because I have also become as you are.[e] You did me no wrong;(D) 13 you know that it was because of a physical illness[f] that I originally preached the gospel to you, 14 and you did not show disdain or contempt because of the trial caused you by my physical condition, but rather you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 Where now is that blessedness of yours?[g] Indeed, I can testify to you that, if it had been possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. 16 So now have I become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They show interest in you, but not in a good way; they want to isolate you,[h] so that you may show interest in them.(E) 18 Now it is good to be shown interest for good reason at all times, and not only when I am with you. 19 My children, for whom I am again in labor until Christ be formed in you!(F) 20 I would like to be with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed because of you.
