A Prayer for Jerusalem

A Davidic song of ascents.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”(A)
Our feet are standing
within your gates, Jerusalem(B)

Jerusalem, built as a city should be,
solidly joined together,(C)
where the tribes, Yahweh’s tribes, go up
to give thanks to the name of Yahweh.(D)
(This is an ordinance for Israel.(E))
There, thrones for judgment are placed,
thrones of the house of David.(F)

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you prosper;(G)
may there be peace within your walls,
prosperity within your fortresses.”(H)
Because of my brothers and friends,
I will say, “Peace be with you.”(I)
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your good.(J)

Genesis 6:1-10

Sons of God and Daughters of Men

When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God(A) saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any they chose as wives[a] for themselves.(B) And the Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain[b] with[c] mankind forever,(C) because they are corrupt.[d](D) Their days will be 120 years.” The Nephilim[e] were on the earth both in those days and afterward, when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind, who bore children to them. They were the powerful men of old, the famous men.

Judgment Decreed

When the Lord saw that man’s wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every scheme his mind thought of was nothing but evil all the time,(E) the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth,(F) and He was grieved in His heart. Then the Lord said, “I will wipe off from the face of the earth mankind, whom I created, together with the animals, creatures that crawl, and birds of the sky—for I regret that I made them.” Noah, however, found favor in the sight of the Lord.(G)

God Warns Noah

These are the family records(H) of Noah. Noah was a righteous man,(I) blameless among his contemporaries;(J) Noah walked with God.(K) 10 And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Hebrews 11:1-7

Heroes of Faith

11 Now faith is the reality[a] of what is hoped for, the proof[b] of what is not seen.(A) For our ancestors won God’s approval by it.

By faith we understand that the universe was[c] created by God’s command,[d](B) so that what is seen has been made from things that are not visible.

By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was approved as a righteous man, because God approved his gifts, and even though he is dead, he still speaks through his faith.(C)

By faith Enoch was taken away so he did not experience death, and he was not to be found because God took him away.[e] For prior to his removal he was approved, since he had pleased God.(D) Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for the one who draws near to Him must believe that He exists and rewards those who seek Him.

By faith Noah, after he was warned about what was not yet seen and motivated by godly fear, built an ark to deliver his family. By faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.(E)
