Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Habakkuk Complains to the Lord
1 This is the oracle[a] that the prophet Habakkuk saw:
2 How long, Lord, must I cry for help?
But you do not listen!
I call out to you, “Violence!”
But you do not deliver!
3 Why do you force me to witness injustice?[b]
Why do you put up with wrongdoing?[c]
Destruction and violence confront[d] me;
conflict is present and one must endure strife.[e]
4 For this reason the law lacks power,[f]
and justice is never carried out.[g]
Indeed,[h] the wicked intimidate[i] the innocent.[j]
For this reason justice is perverted.[k]
2 I will stand at my watch post;
I will remain stationed on the city wall.[a]
I will keep watching so I can see what he says to me
and can know[b] how I should answer
when he counters my argument.[c]
The Lord Assures Habakkuk
2 The Lord responded:[d]
“Write down this message.[e]
Record it legibly on tablets
so the one who announces[f] it may read it easily.[g]
3 For the message is a witness to what is decreed;[h]
it gives reliable testimony about how matters will turn out.[i]
Even if the message[j] is not fulfilled right away, wait patiently;[k]
for it will certainly come to pass—it will not arrive late.
4 Look, the one whose desires are not upright will faint from exhaustion,[l]
but the person of integrity[m] will live[n] because of his faithfulness.[o]
Psalm 37[a]
By David.
37 Do not fret[b] when wicked men seem to succeed.[c]
Do not envy evildoers.
2 For they will quickly dry up like grass,
and wither away like plants.[d]
3 Trust in the Lord and do what is right.
Settle in the land and maintain your integrity.[e]
4 Then you will take delight in the Lord,[f]
and he will answer your prayers.[g]
5 Commit your future to the Lord.[h]
Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf.[i]
6 He will vindicate you in broad daylight,
and publicly defend your just cause.[j]
7 Wait patiently for the Lord![k]
Wait confidently[l] for him!
Do not fret over the apparent success of a sinner,[m]
a man who carries out wicked schemes.
8 Do not be angry and frustrated.[n]
Do not fret. That only leads to trouble.
9 Wicked men[o] will be wiped out,[p]
but those who rely on the Lord are the ones who will possess the land.[q]
Salutation
1 From Paul,[a] an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to further the promise[b] of life in Christ Jesus, 2 to Timothy, my dear child. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord!
Thanksgiving and Charge to Timothy
3 I am thankful to God, whom I have served with a clear conscience as my ancestors did,[c] when I remember you in my prayers as I do constantly night and day.[d] 4 As I remember your tears, I long to see you,[e] so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I recall[f] your sincere faith[g] that was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am sure[h] is in you.
6 Because of this I remind you to rekindle God’s gift that you possess[i] through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a Spirit[j] of fear but of power and love and self-control. 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord[k] or of me, a prisoner for his sake, but by[l] God’s power accept your share of suffering[m] for the gospel. 9 He is the one who saved us[n] and called us with a holy calling, not based on[o] our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began,[p] 10 but now made visible through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus. He[q] has broken the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel! 11 For this gospel[r] I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher.[s] 12 Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do.[t] But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set[u] and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me[v] until that day.[w] 13 Hold to the standard[x] of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.[y] 14 Protect that good thing[z] entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us.
5 The[a] apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”[b] 6 So[c] the Lord replied,[d] “If[e] you had faith the size of[f] a mustard seed, you could say to this black mulberry[g] tree, ‘Be pulled out by the roots and planted in the sea,’[h] and it would obey[i] you.
7 “Would any one of you say[j] to your slave[k] who comes in from the field after plowing or shepherding sheep, ‘Come at once and sit down for a meal’?[l] 8 Won’t[m] the master[n] instead say to him, ‘Get my dinner ready, and make yourself ready[o] to serve me while[p] I eat and drink. Then[q] you may eat and drink’? 9 He won’t thank the slave because he did what he was told,[r] will he?[s] 10 So you too, when you have done everything you were commanded to do, should say, ‘We are slaves undeserving of special praise;[t] we have only done what was our duty.’”[u]
