Psalm 49:1-12

Trusting Money Is Foolish

For the director of music. A psalm of the sons of Korah [C descendants of Kohath, son of Levi, who served as Temple musicians; 1 Chr. 6:22].

49 Listen to this, all you ·nations [peoples];
    ·listen [L give ear], all you who live on earth.
Listen, both ·great [high] and ·small [low],
    rich and poor together.
·What I say is wise [L My mouth speaks wisdom],
    and ·my heart speaks with [L the meditation of my heart is] understanding.
I will ·pay attention [extend my ear] to a ·wise saying [proverb];
    I will ·explain [solve] my riddle on the ·harp [lyre].

Why should I ·be afraid of [fear] ·bad [evil] days?
    ·Why should I fear when evil people […when the guilt of deceivers/the treacherous] surround me?
They ·trust [find refuge] in their ·money [wealth]
    and ·brag [boast] about their riches.
No one can ·buy back [ransom; redeem] the life of ·another [or a brother].
    No one can ·pay [L give a ransom to] God for his own life,
because the ·price [ransom; redemption] of a life is ·high [precious].
    No payment is ever enough.
Do people live forever?
    Don’t they all ·face death [L see the Pit; 16:10]?

10 See, even wise people die.
    Fools and stupid people also ·die [perish; Eccl. 2:12–16]
    and ·leave [abandon; forsake] their wealth to others.
11 Their graves will ·always [forever] be their homes.
    ·They will live there from now on [L …their dwelling to all generations],
    even though they named places after themselves.
12 Even rich people do not ·live forever [abide];
    like the animals, people ·die [perish; Eccl. 3:19].

Proverbs 23:1-11

23 ·If [or When] you sit down to eat with a ruler,
    notice ·the food that [L what] is in front of you.
·Control yourself [L Place a knife at your throat]
    ·if you have a big [or to control your] appetite.
Don’t ·be greedy [long] for his fine foods,
    because that food might be ·a trick [false; deceptive].

Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich;
    be wise enough to ·control [stop] yourself.
·Wealth can vanish in the wink of an eye [L Your eye can fly to it and it will be gone].
    It can seem to grow wings
and fly away like an eagle.

Don’t eat the food of ·selfish [stingy; L evil eye] people;
    don’t ·be greedy [long] for their ·fine foods [delicacies].
·Selfish people are always worrying
    about how much the food costs [L They calculate in their minds; or They are like a hair in the throat].
They tell you, “Eat and drink,”
    but ·they don’t really mean it [L their heart is not with you].
You will ·throw up [vomit] the ·little [L crust] you have eaten,
    and you will have wasted your ·kind [pleasant] words.

Don’t speak in the ears of fools [Matt. 7:6];
they will only ·ignore [despise] your ·wise [insightful] words.

10 Don’t move an ·old stone that marks a border [ancient boundary marker; 22:28],
    and don’t ·take [invade] fields that belong to orphans.
11 God, their ·defender [redeemer], is strong;
    he will ·take their side [bring charges; make accusations] against you.

Romans 11:33-36

Praise to God

33 ·Yes [L O], ·how great are [L the depth of] ·God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge [or the riches of God’s wisdom and knowledge]! ·No one can explain [L How unsearchable are…] ·the things God decides [God’s judgments] ·or understand [L …and untraceable…!] his ·ways [paths]. 34 As the Scripture says,

[L For] Who has known the mind of the Lord,
    or who has been ·able to give him advice [his counselor; Is. 40:13]?”
35 “·No one [L Or who…?] has ever given God anything
    that he must pay back [Job 41:11].”

36 ·Yes, God made all things, and everything continues through him and for him [L Because all things come from him, through him and for him]. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
