Psalm 64

For the worship leader. A song of David.

O True God, hear my voice! Listen to my complaint!
    Guard my life; keep me safe from my enemy’s threats.
Hide me from the sinful circle that conspires against me,
    from the band of rebels out to make trouble,
Who sharpen their tongues into swords,
    who take aim with poisonous words like arrows.
They hide in the shadows and shoot at the innocent;
    they shoot at them without warning and without any fear.
They persist in their evil purpose
    and plan in secret to lay their traps.
    And they say, “Who will see them?”
They plot their offense with precision and say,
    “Now we have the perfect crime.”
    The human heart and mind are deep and complex.

But without hesitation the True God will shoot at them;
    His arrow will surely wound them.
He will use their very own words to bring them to destruction;
    all who see will be appalled at what happens to them.
Then everyone will fear the True God;
    they will proclaim His deeds
    and will reflect upon all He has done.

10 The righteous will delight in the Eternal
    and will take shelter in Him.
All those with an honest heart will glorify Him!

Job 18

18 Bildad the Shuhite encouraged Job to righteousness.

Bildad: How long will you keep up the hunt for words?
        Show some sense, and then we can actually converse.
    Why is it we are like cattle to you,
        dumb animals in your eyes?
    You speak of how God “tears at you,” you!
        You tear at yourself in your rage.
    Oh, how self-centered you are!
        Ought the earth be emptied of its inhabitants for your sake?
        Ought the rocks roll away for your convenience?

    Remember, the flame of the wicked is extinguished.
        His fire no longer lends light to anything.
    His tent-lamp goes dark;
        his bedside lamp flickers and dies.
    His long strides falter, as his own plans take him down.
        His then-weakened feet lead him to a net,
    And wander into its waiting mesh.
    A snare clamps around his heel;
        he feels it dig into him.
10     This trap was set for him beforehand:
        a snare is hidden on the ground;
        a net is overhead along the path.
11     Terrors press in on every side
        and badger his every step.
12     His deepest fears stalk him as he staggers, craving him,
        and awaiting his imminent collapse.
13     Bit by bit, disease eats at his skin;
        bit by bit, the firstborn of death gnashes at his limbs.
14     He is torn violently from the safety of his tent
        and forced to march before the king of terrors.

Bildad sees the realm of death not just as a place of rest and waiting, but as a growing society ruled by a king. Sheol always has room for more citizens and always wants more. Like an infant, this place—this firstborn of death—has a voracious appetite for the wicked. And the infant’s father, the king of terrors, has many ways to provide for his child. His terrors are not nightmares or phobias or any other psychological device. Instead, he rules over disaster, disease, and famine—anything that brings death. Through his vibrant imagery, Bildad explains that death is the ultimate fate of the wicked; he implies that Job cannot be evil because the terrors he has faced have not yet killed him.

15 Bildad: Nothing of his remains in his tent,
        and burning sulfur has been scattered on it so no one will dwell there again.
16     Death comes from both directions:
        from below, his roots dry out;
        from above, his branches wither.
17     On the earth, he disappears from memory;
        on the outside, no one recalls his name.
18     He is pushed out of the light into darkness
        and chased from the inhabited world altogether.
19     He has no children, no descendants among his people;
        no one survives him or escapes from his homeland.
20     His fate is unanimously viewed:
        with dismay in the West,
        with horror in the East.
21     Surely this is the way it goes with all evil people;
        surely this is the lot in life for those who do not know God.

1 Corinthians 1:18-31

18 For people who are stumbling toward ruin, the message of the cross is nothing but a tall tale for fools by a fool. But for those of us who are already experiencing the reality of being rescued and made right, it is nothing short of God’s power. 19 This is why the Scripture says:

I will put an end to the wisdom of the so-called wise,
    and I will invalidate the insight of your so-called experts.[a]

20 So now, where is the philosopher? Where is the scholar? Where is the skilled debater, the best of your time? Step up, if you dare. Hasn’t God made fools out of those who count on the wisdom of this rebellious, broken world? 21 For in God’s deep wisdom, He made it so that the world could not even begin to comprehend Him through its own style of wisdom; in fact, God took immense pleasure in rescuing people of faith through the foolishness of the message we preach. 22 It seems the Jews are always asking for signs and the Greeks are always on the prowl for wisdom. 23 But we tell a different story. We proclaim a crucified Jesus, God’s Anointed. For Jews this is scandalous, for outsiders[b] this is moronic, 24 but for those of us living out God’s call—regardless of our Jewish or Greek heritage—we know the Anointed embodies God’s dynamic power and God’s deep wisdom. 25 You can count on this: God’s foolishness will always be wiser than mere human wisdom, and God’s weakness will always be stronger than mere human strength.

The cross challenges human values because no one expects to find freedom through capital punishment. Unlike most of the thousands who faced crucifixion before and after Jesus, He was clearly not a criminal. God uses this contradiction to reveal His power and wisdom: Jesus has offered Himself to death and has been raised to life to bring liberation to others. Those who truly follow this crucified king do not seek power and authority through the normal patterns of the world; they offer themselves in loving sacrifice for others. That is where God’s transforming power is truly revealed in the church.

26 Look carefully at your call, brothers and sisters. By human standards, not many of you are deemed to be wise. Not many are considered powerful. Not many of you come from royalty, right? 27 But celebrate this: God selected the world’s foolish to bring shame upon those who think they are wise; likewise, He selected the world’s weak to bring disgrace upon those who think they are strong. 28 God selected the common and the castoff, whatever lacks status, so He could invalidate the claims of those who think those things are significant. 29 So it makes no sense for any person to boast in God’s presence. 30 Instead, credit God with your new situation: you are united with Jesus the Anointed. He is God’s wisdom for us and more. He is our righteousness and holiness and redemption. 31 As the Scripture says: “If someone wants to boast, he should boast in the Lord.”[c]
