Psalm 91:1-2

Psalm 91[a]

Security Under God’s Protection

I

You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High,[b]
who abide in the shade of the Almighty,
Say to the Lord, “My refuge and fortress,
my God in whom I trust.”(A)

Psalm 91:9-16

Because you have the Lord for your refuge
and have made the Most High your stronghold,
10 No evil shall befall you,
no affliction come near your tent.(A)
11 [a]For he commands his angels with regard to you,(B)
to guard you wherever you go.(C)
12 With their hands they shall support you,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.(D)
13 You can tread upon the asp and the viper,
trample the lion and the dragon.(E)

II

14 Because he clings to me I will deliver him;
because he knows my name I will set him on high.(F)
15 He will call upon me and I will answer;(G)
I will be with him in distress;(H)
I will deliver him and give him honor.
16 With length of days I will satisfy him,
and fill him with my saving power.(I)

Exodus 6:1-13

Chapter 6

The Lord answered Moses: Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh. For by a strong hand, he will let them go; by a strong hand,[a] he will drive them from his land.

Confirmation of the Promise to the Ancestors. [b]Then God spoke to Moses, and said to him: I am the Lord. As God the Almighty[c] I appeared(A) to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but by my name, Lord, I did not make myself known to them. I also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they were residing as aliens.(B) Now that I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians have reduced to slavery, I am mindful of my covenant.(C) Therefore, say to the Israelites: I am the Lord. I will free you from the burdens of the Egyptians and will deliver you from their slavery. I will redeem you by my outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God;(D) and you will know that I, the Lord, am your God who has freed you from the burdens of the Egyptians and I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as your own possession—I, the Lord! But when Moses told this to the Israelites, they would not listen to him because of their dejection and hard slavery.

10 Then the Lord spoke to Moses: 11 Go, tell Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to let the Israelites leave his land. 12 However, Moses protested to the Lord, “If the Israelites did not listen to me, how is it possible that Pharaoh will listen to me, poor speaker[d](E) that I am!” 13 But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron regarding the Israelites and Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and charged them to bring the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.

Acts 7:35-42

35 This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, ‘Who appointed you ruler and judge?’ God sent as [both] ruler and deliverer, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.(A) 36 This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the desert for forty years.(B) 37 It was this Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you, from among your own kinsfolk, a prophet like me.’(C) 38 It was he who, in the assembly in the desert, was with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai and with our ancestors, and he received living utterances to hand on to us.(D)

39 “Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him; instead, they pushed him aside and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,(E) 40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will be our leaders. As for that Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’(F) 41 (G)So they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifice to the idol, and reveled in the works of their hands. 42 Then God turned and handed them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:(H)

‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
for forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?(I)
