Version
Psalm 1

Book 1 (Psalms 1-41)

Psalm 1[a]

How blessed[b] is the one[c] who does not follow[d] the advice[e] of the wicked,[f]
or stand in the pathway[g] with sinners,
or sit in the assembly[h] of scoffers.[i]
Instead[j] he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands;[k]
he meditates on[l] his commands[m] day and night.
He is like[n] a tree planted by flowing streams;[o]
it[p] yields[q] its fruit at the proper time,[r]
and its leaves never fall off.[s]
He succeeds in everything he attempts.[t]
Not so with the wicked!
Instead[u] they are like wind-driven chaff.[v]
For this reason[w] the wicked cannot withstand[x] judgment,[y]
nor can sinners join the assembly of the godly.[z]
Certainly[aa] the Lord guards the way of the godly,[ab]
but the way of the wicked ends in destruction.[ac]

Jeremiah 13:20-27

20 Then I said,[a]

“Look up, Jerusalem,[b] and see
the enemy[c] that is coming from the north.
Where now is the flock of people that were entrusted to your care?[d]
Where now are the ‘sheep’ that you take such pride in?[e]
21 What will you say[f] when the Lord[g] appoints as rulers over you those allies
that you, yourself, had actually prepared as such?[h]
Then anguish and agony will grip you
like that of a woman giving birth to a baby.[i]
22 You will probably ask yourself,[j]
‘Why have these things happened to me?
Why have I been treated like a disgraced adulteress
whose skirt has been torn off and her limbs exposed?’[k]
It is because you have sinned so much.[l]
23 But there is little hope for you ever doing good,
you who are so accustomed to doing evil.
Can an Ethiopian[m] change the color of his skin?
Can a leopard remove its spots?[n]

24 “The Lord says,[o]

‘That is why I will scatter your people[p] like chaff
that is blown away by a desert wind.[q]
25 This is your fate,
the destiny to which I have appointed you,
because you have forgotten me
and have trusted in false gods.
26 So I will pull your skirt up over your face
and expose you to shame like a disgraced adulteress![r]
27 People of Jerusalem,[s] I have seen your adulterous worship,
your shameless prostitution to, and your lustful pursuit of, other gods.[t]
I have seen your disgusting acts of worship[u]
on the hills throughout the countryside.
You are doomed to destruction![v]
How long will you continue to be unclean?’”

1 Peter 1:17-2:1

17 And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one’s work, live out the time of your temporary residence here[a] in reverence. 18 You know that from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors you were ransomed—not by perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ. 20 He was foreknown[b] before the foundation of the world but[c] was manifested in these last times[d] for your sake. 21 Through him you now trust[e] in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 You have purified[f] your souls by obeying the truth[g] in order to show sincere mutual love.[h] So[i] love one another earnestly from a pure heart.[j] 23 You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For

all flesh[k] is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of the grass;[l]
the grass withers and the flower falls off,
25 but the word of the Lord[m] endures forever.[n]

And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.

So get rid of[o] all evil and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.
