Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
23 (A)The steps of a good man are [a]ordered by the Lord,
And He delights in his way.
24 (B)Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For the Lord upholds him with His hand.
25 I have been young, and now am old;
Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
Nor his descendants begging bread.
26 (C)He is [b]ever merciful, and lends;
And his descendants are blessed.
27 Depart from evil, and do good;
And dwell forevermore.
28 For the Lord loves justice,
And does not forsake His saints;
They are preserved forever,
But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off.
29 (D)The righteous shall inherit the land,
And dwell in it forever.
30 (E)The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom,
And his tongue talks of justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart;
None of his steps shall [c]slide.
32 The wicked (F)watches the righteous,
And seeks to slay him.
33 The Lord (G)will not leave him in his hand,
Nor condemn him when he is judged.
34 (H)Wait on the Lord,
And keep His way,
And He shall exalt you to inherit the land;
When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.
35 I have seen the wicked in great power,
And spreading himself like a native green tree.
36 Yet [d]he passed away, and behold, he was no more;
Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.
37 Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright;
For the future of that man is peace.
38 (I)But the transgressors shall be destroyed together;
The future of the wicked shall be cut off.
Saul Proclaimed King
17 Then Samuel called the people together (A)to the Lord (B)at Mizpah, 18 and said to the children of Israel, (C)“Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all kingdoms and from those who oppressed you.’ 19 (D)But you have today rejected your God, who Himself saved you from all your adversities and your tribulations; and you have said to Him, ‘No, set a king over us!’ Now therefore, present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your [a]clans.”
20 And when Samuel had (E)caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. 21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was chosen. And Saul the son of Kish was chosen. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 Therefore they (F)inquired of the Lord further, “Has the man come here yet?”
And the Lord answered, “There he is, hidden among the equipment.”
23 So they ran and brought him from there; and when he stood among the people, (G)he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him (H)whom the Lord has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?”
So all the people shouted and said, (I)“Long[b] live the king!”
25 Then Samuel explained to the people (J)the behavior of royalty, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
God’s Infallible Purpose in Christ
13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, (A)He swore by Himself, 14 saying, (B)“Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the (C)promise. 16 For men indeed swear by the greater, and (D)an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to (E)the heirs of promise (F)the [a]immutability of His counsel, [b]confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two [c]immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to (G)lie, we [d]might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope (H)set before us.
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, (I)and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 (J)where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, (K)having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
