The Man Who Fears the Lord

The Man Who Fears the Lord

Praise the Lord.[a]

How blessed is a man who fears the Lord.
In his commands he delights greatly.
His descendants will be mighty in the land.
The circle of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in his house,
and his righteousness stands forever.
In darkness, light dawns for the upright.
He is gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good things will come to the man
    who is gracious and lends,
who conducts his business with justice.
Surely he will never fall.
The righteous will be remembered forever.
He will not fear bad news.
His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
His heart is secure.
He will have no fear, until he looks in triumph on his foes.
He scatters seed—he gives to the poor.
His righteousness stands forever.
His horn[b] will be lifted high in glory.

The End of the Wicked

10 The wicked person will see and be frustrated.
He will gnash his teeth and melt away.
The desire of the wicked will perish.

Jeremiah 3:6-14

Unfaithful Israel, Treacherous Judah

In the days of King Josiah, the Lord asked me:

Have you seen what unfaithful Israel did? She has gone up onto every high hill and under every green tree and acted like a prostitute there. I told myself that after she did all this, she would return to me, but she did not return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it. Unfaithful Israel committed adultery, so I sent her away. I gave her a certificate of divorce, yet I saw that in spite of this, her treacherous sister Judah had no fear. She also went and acted like a prostitute. Since Israel regarded her sexual sins so lightly, she defiled the land by committing adultery with stones and trees. 10 In spite of all this, her treacherous sister Judah did not turn back to me with all her heart, but only pretended, declares the Lord.

11 Then the Lord said to me:
Unfaithful Israel is more righteous than treacherous Judah.
12 Go, proclaim these words to the north.
Return, unfaithful Israel, declares the Lord.
I will no longer frown on you,
because I am merciful, declares the Lord.
I will not be angry forever.
13 At least acknowledge your guilt.
Admit that you rebelled against the Lord your God.
You have distributed your favors to strangers under every green tree,
and you have not listened to me, declares the Lord.

14 Return, unfaithful people, declares the Lord, because I am your husband. I will take you—one from a city, two from a family—and bring you to Zion.

Matthew 5:27-36

Lust

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery,’[a] 28 but I tell you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to fall into sin, pluck it out and throw it away from you. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 If your right hand causes you to fall into sin, cut it off and throw it away from you. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

Divorce

31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[b] 32 But I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, causes her to be regarded as an adulteress. And whoever marries the divorced woman is regarded as an adulterer.

Oaths

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to people long ago, ‘Do not break your oaths, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.’[c] 34 But I tell you, do not swear at all: not by heaven, because it is God’s throne; 35 and not by earth, because it is his footstool; and not by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not swear by your own head, since you cannot make one hair white or black.
