Psalm 146

Psalm 146

Praise Him for Protection

Praise for Protection

Praise the Lord.[a]

A Lifetime of Praise

Praise the Lord, O my soul.
I will praise the Lord as long as I live.
I will make music to my God as long as I exist.

No Help in Humans

Do not trust in human helpers,[b]
in a mortal man who cannot save you.
His spirit departs.
He returns to the ground he came from.
On that day, his plans have perished.

Help in the Lord

Blessed is everyone who has the God of Jacob as his help.
His hope is in the Lord his God,
the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything which is in them.
He is the one who stays faithful forever.
He obtains justice for the oppressed.
He gives food to the hungry.
The Lord releases prisoners.
The Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down.
The Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the aliens.
The fatherless and the widow he sustains,
but he turns aside the way of the wicked.

An Eternity for Praise

10 The Lord reigns forever.
Your God, O Zion, rules for all generations.
Praise the Lord.

Isaiah 30:27-33

God Will Punish Assyria

27 Look! The name of the Lord is coming from far away,
burning with anger, in a column of thick smoke.
His lips are full of anger,
and his tongue is a consuming fire.
28 His breath is a stream at flood stage,
surging all the way up to your neck.
He shakes the nations in a sieve to destroy them,
and he puts a bridle in their mouths to lead them to destruction.
29 You will sing as you do on the night of a holy festival,
    with glad hearts,
as when they go up with flutes to the mountain of the Lord,
to the Rock of Israel.
30 The Lord will cause the majestic splendor of his voice to be heard.
He will make them see his arm come crashing down in fierce anger,
like the flames of a consuming fire,
like driving rain, a furious storm with hailstones.
31 The voice of the Lord will terrify Assyria.
He will strike it with his rod.
32 Every stroke of the punishing rod[a] which the Lord will lay on them
will be accompanied by the music of drums and lyres.
He himself will fight, battling them, swinging weapons.
33 Topheth has long been made ready.
It is prepared for the king,
a flaming funeral pyre, deep and wide, with plenty of wood.
The breath of the Lord, like a river of liquid fire, sets it ablaze.

Romans 2:1-11

God Will Judge What Each Person Does

Therefore, you are without excuse, every one of you who judges someone else, because by judging the other person you also condemn yourself, since you, who are judging, are doing the very same things. And we know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth.

Are you thinking that you will escape God’s judgment, you who judge those who do such things and then do the same things yourself? Or do you have so little regard for his rich kindness, his restraint, and his patience, that you ignore the fact that the purpose of God’s kindness is to lead you to repentance? As a result of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when God will reveal his righteous judgment.

God “will repay each person according to what he has done”[a] eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality by persisting in doing what is good, but furious anger to those who out of selfish ambition are disobeying what is true and obeying what is wrong. There will be trouble and distress for the soul of every person who does what is evil—for the Jew first and for the Greek— 10 but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does what is good—for the Jew first and for the Greek. 11 For God does not show favoritism.
