Psalm 106:1-6

Israel’s Failure to Trust God

106 Praise the Lord!
Thank the Lord because he is good.
    His love continues forever.
No one can tell all the mighty things the Lord has done.
No one can speak all his praise.
Happy are those people who are fair,
who do what is right at all times.

Lord, remember me when you are kind to your people.
Help me when you save them.
Let me see the good things you do for your chosen people.
Let me be happy along with your happy nation.
Let me join your own people in praising you.

We have sinned just as our ancestors did.
We have done wrong. We have done evil.

Psalm 106:13-23

13 But they quickly forgot what he had done.
They did not wait for his advice.
14 They became greedy for food in the desert.
    And they tested God there.
15 So he gave them what they wanted.
But he also sent a terrible disease among them.

16 The people in the camp became jealous of Moses
and of Aaron, the holy priest of the Lord.
17 Then the ground opened up and swallowed Dathan.
    It closed over Abiram’s group.
18 Then a fire burned among their followers.
Flames burned up the wicked people.

19 The people made a gold calf at Mount Sinai.
    They worshiped a metal statue.
20 They exchanged their glorious God
for a statue of a bull, which eats grass.
21 They forgot the God who saved them,
who had done great things in Egypt.
22 He did miracles in Egypt.[a]
He did amazing things by the Red Sea.
23 So God said he would destroy them.
But Moses, his chosen one, stood before him.
He stopped God’s anger from destroying them.

Psalm 106:47-48

47 Lord our God, save us.
Bring us back from other nations.
Then we will thank you.
Then we will gladly praise you.

48 Praise the Lord, the God of Israel.
He always was and always will be.
Let all the people say, “Amen!”

Praise the Lord!

Deuteronomy 4:9-14

But be careful! Watch out. Don’t forget the things that you have seen. Don’t forget them as long as you live. Teach them to your children and grandchildren. 10 Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Mount Sinai. He said to me, “Bring the people together to listen to what I say. Then they will respect me as long as they live in the land. And they will teach these things to their children.” 11 Then you came and stood at the bottom of the mountain. It blazed with fire that reached to the sky. Black clouds made it very dark. 12 Then the Lord spoke to you from the fire. You heard the sound of words. But you did not see him. There was only a voice. 13 The Lord told you about his agreement. It was the Ten Commandments. And he told you to obey them. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets. 14 Then the Lord commanded me to teach you the laws and rules. You must obey them in the land you will own when you cross the Jordan River.

1 Timothy 4:6-16

Be a Good Servant of Christ

Tell these things to the brothers. This will show that you are a good servant of Christ Jesus. You will show that you are made strong by the words of faith and good teaching that you have been following. People tell silly stories that do not agree with God’s truth. Do not follow what those stories teach. But teach yourself only to serve God. Training your body helps you in some ways, but serving God helps you in every way. Serving God brings you blessings in this life and in the future life, too. What I say is true, and you should fully accept it. 10 For this is why we work and struggle:[a] We hope in the living God. He is the Savior of all people. And in a very special way, he is the Savior of all who believe in him.

11 Command and teach these things. 12 You are young, but do not let anyone treat you as if you were not important. Be an example to show the believers how they should live. Show them with your words, with the way you live, with your love, with your faith, and with your pure life. 13 Continue to read the Scriptures to the people, strengthen them, and teach them. Do these things until I come. 14 Remember to use the gift that you have. That gift was given to you through a prophecy when the group of elders laid their hands on[b] you. 15 Continue to do those things. Give your life to doing them. Then everyone can see that your work is progressing. 16 Be careful in your life and in your teaching. Continue to live and teach rightly. Then you will save yourself and those people who listen to you.
