Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Wickedness of Men and Lovingkindness of God.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord.
36 Transgression speaks to the ungodly within [a]his heart;
There is (A)no fear of God before his eyes.
2 For [b]it (B)flatters him in his own eyes
Concerning the discovery of his iniquity and the hatred of it.
3 The (C)words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit;
He has (D)ceased to [c]be wise and to do good.
4 He (E)plans wickedness upon his bed;
He sets himself on a (F)path that is not good;
He (G)does not despise evil.
5 Your (H)lovingkindness, O Lord, [d]extends to the heavens,
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
6 Your (I)righteousness is like the [e]mountains of God;
Your (J)judgments are like a great deep.
O Lord, You (K)preserve man and beast.
7 How (L)precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
And the children of men (M)take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
8 They (N)drink their fill of the [f]abundance of Your house;
And You give them to drink of the (O)river of Your delights.
9 For with You is the (P)fountain of life;
In Your light we see light.
13 Now there was no [a]food in all the land, because the famine was very severe, so that (A)the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 (B)Joseph gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. 15 When the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph [b]and said, “Give us [c]food, for (C)why should we die in your presence? For our money [d]is gone.” 16 Then Joseph said, “Give up your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock, since your money [e]is gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them [f]food in exchange for the horses and the [g]flocks and the herds and the donkeys; and he [h]fed them with [i]food in exchange for all their livestock [j]that year. 18 When that year was ended, they came to him the [k]next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is all spent, and the [l]cattle are my lord’s. There is nothing left [m]for my lord except our bodies and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for [n]food, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. So give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”
Result of the Famine
20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for [o]every Egyptian sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. Thus the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 As for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other. 22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they [p]lived off the allotment which Pharaoh gave them. Therefore, they did not sell their land. 23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have today bought you and your land for Pharaoh; now, here is seed for you, and you may sow the land. 24 [q]At the harvest you shall give a (D)fifth to Pharaoh, and [r]four-fifths shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food and for those of your households and as food for your little ones.” 25 So they said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.” 26 Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt valid to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; (E)only the land of the priests [s]did not become Pharaoh’s.
14 And they had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them. 15 And He was giving orders to them, saying, “(A)Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of (B)Herod.” 16 They began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And Jesus, aware of this, *said to them, “Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? (C)Do you not yet see or understand? Do you have a [a]hardened heart? 18 (D)Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember, 19 when I broke (E)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many (F)baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?” They *said to Him, “Twelve.” 20 “When I broke (G)the seven for the four thousand, how many large (H)baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they *said to Him, “Seven.” 21 And He was saying to them, “(I)Do you not yet understand?”
