The Lord Delivers Men from Manifold Troubles.
23 Those who (A)go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters;
24 They have seen the works of the Lord,
And His [a]wonders in the deep.
25 For He (B)spoke and raised up a (C)stormy wind,
Which (D)lifted up the waves [b]of the sea.
26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul (E)melted away in their misery.
27 They reeled and (F)staggered like a drunken man,
And [c]were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
29 He (G)caused the storm to be still,
So that the waves [d]of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He guided them to their desired haven.
31 (H)Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness,
And for His [e](I)wonders to the sons of men!
32 Let them (J)extol Him also (K)in the congregation of the people,
And (L)praise Him at the seat of the elders.
21 “To me (A)they listened and waited,
And kept silent for my counsel.
22 “After my words they did not (B)speak again,
And (C)my speech dropped on them.
23 “They waited for me as for the rain,
And opened their mouth as for the spring rain.
24 “I smiled on them when they did not believe,
And the light of my face they did not cast down.
25 “I chose a way for them and sat as (D)chief,
And dwelt as a king among the troops,
As one who (E)comforted the mourners.
Job’s Present State Is Humiliating
30 “But now those younger than I (F)mock me,
Whose fathers I disdained to put with the dogs of my flock.
2 “Indeed, what good was the strength of their hands to me?
Vigor had perished from them.
3 “From want and famine they are gaunt
Who gnaw the dry ground by night in waste and desolation,
4 Who pluck [a]mallow by the bushes,
And whose food is the root of the broom shrub.
5 “They are driven from the community;
They shout against them as against a thief,
6 So that they dwell in dreadful [b]valleys,
In holes of the earth and of the rocks.
7 “Among the bushes they [c]cry out;
Under the nettles they are gathered together.
8 “[d]Fools, even [e]those without a name,
They were scourged from the land.
9 “And now I have become their [f](G)taunt,
I have even become a (H)byword to them.
10 “They abhor me and stand aloof from me,
And they do not [g]refrain from (I)spitting at my face.
11 “Because [h]He has loosed [i]His [j]bowstring and (J)afflicted me,
They have cast off (K)the bridle before me.
12 “On the right hand their [k]brood arises;
They (L)thrust aside my feet (M)and build up against me their ways of destruction.
13 “They (N)break up my path,
They profit [l]from my destruction;
No one restrains them.
14 “As through a wide breach they come,
[m]Amid the tempest they roll on.
15 “(O)Terrors are turned against me;
They pursue my [n]honor as the wind,
And my [o]prosperity has passed away (P)like a cloud.
Paul Sails from Miletus
21 When (A)we had parted from them and had set sail, we ran (B)a straight course to Cos and the next day to Rhodes and from there to Patara; 2 and having found a ship crossing over to (C)Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail. 3 When we came in sight of (D)Cyprus, leaving it on the left, we kept sailing to (E)Syria and landed at (F)Tyre; for there the ship was to unload its cargo. 4 After looking up (G)the disciples, we stayed there seven days; and they kept telling Paul [a](H)through the Spirit not to set foot in Jerusalem. 5 When [b]our days there were ended, we left and started on our journey, while they all, with wives and children, (I)escorted us until we were out of the city. After (J)kneeling down on the beach and praying, we said farewell to one another. 6 Then we went on board the ship, and they returned (K)home again.
7 When we had finished the voyage from (L)Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais, and after greeting (M)the brethren, we stayed with them for a day. 8 On the next day we left and came to (N)Caesarea, and entering the house of (O)Philip the (P)evangelist, who was (Q)one of the seven, we stayed with him. 9 Now this man had four virgin daughters who were (R)prophetesses. 10 As we were staying there for some days, a prophet named (S)Agabus came down from Judea. 11 And coming to us, he (T)took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands, and said, “This (U)is what the Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews at Jerusalem will (V)bind the man who owns this belt and (W)deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’” 12 When we had heard this, we as well as the local residents began begging him (X)not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For (Y)I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die at Jerusalem for (Z)the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 And since he would not be persuaded, we fell silent, remarking, “(AA)The will of the Lord be done!”

15 After these days we got ready and (AB)started on our way up to Jerusalem. 16 Some of (AC)the disciples from (AD)Caesarea also came with us, taking us to Mnason of (AE)Cyprus, a (AF)disciple of long standing with whom we were to lodge.
