Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Day of Pentecost
2 When (A)the day of Pentecost [a]had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled (B)the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire [b]distributing themselves, and [c]they [d]rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all (C)filled with the Holy Spirit and began to (D)speak with other [e]tongues, as the Spirit was giving them [f]utterance.
5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, (E)devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when (F)this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own [g]language. 7 (G)They were amazed and astonished, saying, “[h]Why, are not all these who are speaking (H)Galileans? 8 And how is it that we each hear them in our own [i]language [j]to which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and (I)Cappadocia, (J)Pontus and [k](K)Asia, 10 (L)Phrygia and (M)Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around (N)Cyrene, and [l](O)visitors from Rome, both Jews and [m](P)proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.” 12 And (Q)they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others were mocking and saying, “(R)They are full of [n]sweet wine.”
Peter’s Sermon
14 But Peter, [o]taking his stand with (S)the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. 15 For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, (T)for it is only the [p]third hour of the day; 16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:
17 ‘(U)And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all [q]mankind;
And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
And your young men shall see visions,
And your old men shall dream dreams;
18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women,
I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit
And they shall prophesy.
19 ‘And I will grant wonders in the sky above
And signs on the earth below,
Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.
20 ‘The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.
21 ‘And it shall be that (V)everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones
37 The (A)hand of the Lord was upon me, and He (B)brought me out [a]by the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the (C)valley; and it was full of bones. 2 He caused me to pass among them round about, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley; and lo, they were very dry. 3 He said to me, “Son of man, (D)can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord [b]God, (E)You know.” 4 Again He said to me, “(F)Prophesy over these bones and say to them, ‘O dry bones, (G)hear the word of the Lord.’ 5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones, ‘Behold, I will cause [c](H)breath to enter you that you may come to life. 6 I will put sinews on you, make flesh grow back on you, cover you with skin and put breath in you that you may come alive; and you will (I)know that I am the Lord.’”
7 So I prophesied (J)as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a [d]noise, and behold, a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8 And I looked, and behold, sinews were on them, and flesh grew and skin covered them; but there was no breath in them. 9 Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Come from the four winds, O breath, and (K)breathe on these slain, that they (L)come to life.”’” 10 So I prophesied as He commanded me, and the (M)breath came into them, and they came to life and stood on their feet, an (N)exceedingly great army.
The Vision Explained
11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the (O)whole house of Israel; behold, they say, ‘Our (P)bones are dried up and our hope has perished. We are [e]completely (Q)cut off.’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I will open your graves and (R)cause you to come up out of your graves, My people; and I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13 Then you will know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves and caused you to come up out of your graves, My people. 14 I will (S)put My [f]Spirit within you and you will come to life, and I will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have spoken and done it,” declares the Lord.’”
24 O Lord, how (A)many are Your works!
[a]In (B)wisdom You have made them all;
The (C)earth is full of Your [b]possessions.
25 [c]There is the (D)sea, great and [d]broad,
In which are swarms without number,
Animals both small and great.
26 There the (E)ships move along,
And [e](F)Leviathan, which You have formed to sport in it.
27 They all (G)wait for You
To (H)give them their food in [f]due season.
28 You give to them, they gather it up;
You (I)open Your hand, they are satisfied with good.
29 You (J)hide Your face, they are dismayed;
You (K)take away their [g]spirit, they expire
And (L)return to their dust.
30 You send forth Your [h](M)Spirit, they are created;
And You renew the face of the ground.
31 Let the (N)glory of the Lord endure forever;
Let the Lord (O)be glad in His works;
32 [i]He (P)looks at the earth, and it (Q)trembles;
He (R)touches the mountains, and they smoke.
33 [j]I will sing to the Lord [k](S)as long as I live;
[l]I will (T)sing praise to my God [m]while I have my being.
34 Let my (U)meditation be pleasing to Him;
As for me, I shall (V)be glad in the Lord.
22 For we know that the whole creation (A)groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 (B)And not only this, but also we ourselves, having (C)the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves (D)groan within ourselves, (E)waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, (F)the redemption of our body. 24 For (G)in hope we have been saved, but (H)hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But (I)if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.
Our Victory in Christ
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for (J)we do not know how to pray as we should, but (K)the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and (L)He who searches the hearts knows what (M)the mind of the Spirit is, because He (N)intercedes for the [a]saints according to the will of God.

21 ‘And it shall be that (V)everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
4 But these things I have spoken to you, (A)so that when their hour comes, you [a]may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you (B)at the beginning, because I was with you.
The Holy Spirit Promised
5 “But now (C)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘(D)Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, (E)sorrow has filled your heart. 7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the [b](F)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, (G)I will send Him to you. 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, (H)because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning (I)righteousness, because (J)I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 (K)and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when He, (L)the Spirit of truth, comes, He will (M)guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will (N)glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 (O)All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
