Genesis 1:1-5

The Creation

In the beginning(A) God created the heavens and the earth.[a](B)

Now the earth was formless and empty,(C) darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.(D) Then God said, “Let there be light,”(E) and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” There was an evening, and there was a morning: one day.

Psalm 29

Psalm 29

The Voice of the Lord

A psalm of David.

Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,[a]
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord
in the splendor of his holiness.[b](A)

The voice of the Lord is above the waters.
The God of glory thunders—
the Lord, above the vast water,(B)
the voice of the Lord in power,
the voice of the Lord in splendor.(C)
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon.(D)
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,(E)
and Sirion, like a young wild ox.(F)
The voice of the Lord flashes flames of fire.(G)
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.(H)
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth[c](I)
and strips the woodlands bare.(J)
In his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned, King forever.(K)
11 The Lord gives his people strength;(L)
the Lord blesses his people with peace.(M)

Acts 19:1-7

Twelve Disciples of John the Baptist

19 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions and came to Ephesus. He found some disciples(A) and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” (B)

“No,” they told him, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”(C)

“Into what then were you baptized?” he asked them.

“Into John’s baptism,” they replied.(D)

Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance,(E) telling the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”(F)

When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on(G) them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in tongues[a] and to prophesy.(H) Now there were about twelve men in all.

Mark 1:4-11

John came baptizing[a](A) in the wilderness(B) and proclaiming a baptism of repentance(C) for the forgiveness(D) of sins.(E) The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem(F) were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan(G) River, confessing(H) their sins.(I) John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts(J) and wild honey.(K)

He proclaimed, “One who is more powerful(L) than I am is coming after me.(M) I am not worthy(N) to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.(O) I baptize you with[b] water,(P) but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”(Q)

The Baptism of Jesus

In(R) those days Jesus came from Nazareth(S) in Galilee(T) and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens(U) being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice(V) came from heaven:(W) “You are my beloved(X) Son;(Y) with you I am well-pleased.”(Z)
