Psalm 5

Psalm 5

With You the Wicked Cannot Dwell

Heading

For the choir director. For flutes. A psalm by David.

Access in Prayer

Turn your ear to my words, O Lord.
Understand me when I sigh.
Pay attention to my cry for help,
    my King and my God,
    for to you I pray.
Lord, in the morning you hear my voice.
In the morning I lay out my requests in front of you,
and I watch for your answer.

No Access

For you are not a God who takes pleasure in evil.
With you the wicked cannot dwell.
The arrogant cannot stand before your eyes.
You hate all evildoers.
You put to death those who speak lies.
The Lord is disgusted with bloodthirsty, deceitful men.

Access in Prayer

But as for me, by your great mercy
    I will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
        with reverence for you.
Lord, lead me in your righteousness.
Because of those who slander me,
make your way straight before me.

Lying Tongues

Nothing reliable comes out of their mouth.
From within them comes destruction.
Their throat is an open grave.
With their tongue they flatter.
10 Declare them guilty, O God!
Let them fall because of their own schemes.
For their many treacherous deeds banish them,
because they have rebelled against you.

Praising Tongues

11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad.
Let them sing for joy forever.
You cover them with protection,
so those who love your name rejoice in you.
12 Yes, you bless the righteous, Lord.
You surround them with your favor as a shield.

Proverbs 16:21-33

21 A wise heart will be called discerning,
and appealing speech increases learning.
22 Good sense is a fountain of life for the person who possesses it,
but the instruction given by stubborn fools is stupidity.
23 A wise heart produces edifying speech.
It makes a person’s lips more persuasive.
24 Pleasant speech is honey from a honeycomb,
sweet to the spirit and healing for the bones.

Advice for a Wise Son

25 There is a way that seems right to a man,
but it ends up being the road to death.
26 A laborer’s appetite labors for him,
because the hunger of his mouth drives him on.
27 A worthless scoundrel constantly plots evil,
and from his lips comes a scorching fire.
28 A perverse[a] man spreads conflict,
and a gossip separates intimate friends.
29 A violent man entices his neighbor.
He leads him on a way that is not good.
30 A person who squints his eyes is plotting something perverse.
One who purses his lips has completed some evil plot.
31 Gray hair is a beautiful crown.
It is found on the way to righteousness.
32 Better to be patient than to be a hero,
better to control your temper than to capture a city.
33 Lots are cast into the pouch,[b]
but the Lord determines all their decisions.

Matthew 15:1-9

Commandments and Traditions

15 Then the Pharisees and experts in the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For example, God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’[a] and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of his father or mother should be put to death.’[b] But you say that if someone tells his father or mother, ‘Whatever help you might have received from me has been dedicated as a gift to God,’[c] that man does not need to honor his father or his mother.[d] And so you set aside the word of God for the sake of your tradition. Hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
They worship me in vain, teaching human rules as if they are doctrines.”[e]
