Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Lord the Shepherd of His People
A Psalm of David.
23 The Lord is (A)my shepherd;
(B)I shall not [a]want.
2 (C)He makes me to lie down in [b]green pastures;
(D)He leads me beside the [c]still waters.
3 He restores my soul;
(E)He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
8 (A)He removed the [a]protection of Judah.
You looked in that day to the armor (B)of the House of the Forest;
9 (C)You also saw the [b]damage to the city of David,
That it was great;
And you gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
10 You numbered the houses of Jerusalem,
And the houses you broke down
To fortify the wall.
11 (D)You also made a reservoir between the two walls
For the water of the old (E)pool.
But you did not look to its Maker,
Nor did you have respect for Him who fashioned it long ago.
4 [a]Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that (A)friendship with the world is enmity with God? (B)Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, (C)“The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?
6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
(D)“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”
Humility Cures Worldliness
7 Therefore submit to God. (E)Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 (F)Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (G)Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and (H)purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 (I)Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 (J)Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
