Isaiah 44:6-8

The Absurdity of Idolatry

This is what the Lord, Israel’s king, says,
their Protector,[a] the Lord of Heaven’s Armies:
“I am the first and I am the last,
there is no God but me.
Who is like me? Let him make his claim![b]
Let him announce it and explain it to me—
since I established an ancient people[c]
let them announce future events.[d]
Don’t panic! Don’t be afraid![e]
Did I not tell you beforehand and decree it?
You are my witnesses! Is there any God but me?
There is no other sheltering rock;[f] I know of none.

Psalm 86:11-17

11 O Lord, teach me how you want me to live.[a]
Then I will obey your commands.[b]
Make me wholeheartedly committed to you.[c]
12 O Lord, my God, I will give you thanks with my whole heart.
I will honor your name continually.[d]
13 For you will extend your great loyal love to me,[e]
and will deliver my life[f] from the depths of Sheol.[g]
14 O God, arrogant men attack me;[h]
a gang[i] of ruthless men, who do not respect you, seek my life.[j]
15 But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and merciful God.
You are patient[k] and demonstrate great loyal love and faithfulness.[l]
16 Turn toward me and have mercy on me.
Give your servant your strength.
Deliver this son of your female servant.[m]
17 Show me evidence of your favor.[n]
Then those who hate me will see it and be ashamed,[o]
for you, O Lord, will help me and comfort me.[p]

Romans 8:12-25

12 So then,[a] brothers and sisters,[b] we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh 13 (for if you live according to the flesh, you will[c] die),[d] but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are[e] the sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear,[f] but you received the Spirit of adoption,[g] by whom[h] we cry, “Abba,[i] Father.” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness to[j] our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ)[k]—if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him.

18 For I consider that our present sufferings cannot even be compared[l] to the coming glory that will be revealed to us. 19 For the creation eagerly waits for the revelation of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility—not willingly but because of God[m] who subjected it—in hope 21 that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers together until now. 23 Not only this, but we ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,[n] groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption,[o] the redemption of our bodies.[p] 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope, because who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with endurance.[q]

Matthew 13:24-30

The Parable of the Weeds

24 He presented them with another parable:[a] “The kingdom of heaven is like a person who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and sowed darnel[b] among the wheat and went away. 26 When[c] the plants sprouted and produced grain, then the darnel also appeared. 27 So the slaves[d] of the landowner[e] came and said to him, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Then where did the darnel come from?’ 28 He said, ‘An enemy has done this!’ So[f] the slaves replied, ‘Do you want us to go and gather it?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, since in gathering the darnel you may uproot the wheat along with it. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At[g] harvest time I will tell the reapers, “First collect the darnel and tie it in bundles to be burned, but then gather[h] the wheat into my barn.”’”

Matthew 13:36-43

Explanation for the Disciples

36 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him saying, “Explain to us the parable of the darnel[a] in the field.” 37 He[b] answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world and the good seed are the people[c] of the kingdom. The poisonous weeds[d] are the people[e] of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 As[f] the poisonous weeds[g] are collected and burned with fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather from his kingdom everything that causes sin as well as all lawbreakers.[h] 42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace,[i] where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.[j] The one who has ears had better listen![k]
