7 “(A)Hear, O My people, and I will speak;
O Israel, I will testify [a]against you;
I am God, (B)your God.
8 “I do (C)not reprove you for your sacrifices,
And your burnt offerings are continually before Me.
9 “I shall take no (D)young bull out of your house
Nor male goats out of your folds.
10 “For (E)every beast of the forest is Mine,
The cattle on a thousand hills.
11 “I know every (F)bird of the mountains,
And everything that moves in the field is [b]Mine.
12 “If I were hungry I would not tell you,
For the (G)world is Mine, and [c]all it contains.
13 “Shall I eat the flesh of [d](H)bulls
Or drink the blood of male goats?
14 “Offer to God (I)a sacrifice of thanksgiving
And (J)pay your vows to the Most High;
15 (K)Call upon Me in the day of trouble;
I shall (L)rescue you, and you will (M)honor Me.”
40 Let us (A)examine and probe our ways,
And let us return to the Lord.
41 We (B)lift up our heart [a]and hands
Toward God in heaven;
42 We have (C)transgressed and rebelled,
You have (D)not pardoned.
43 You have covered Yourself with (E)anger
And (F)pursued us;
You have slain and (G)have not spared.
44 You have (H)covered Yourself with a cloud
So that (I)no prayer can pass through.
45 You have made us mere (J)offscouring and refuse
In the midst of the peoples.
46 All our enemies have (K)opened their mouths against us.
47 (L)Panic and pitfall have befallen us,
Devastation and destruction;
48 My [b](M)eyes run down with streams of water
Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49 My eyes pour down (N)unceasingly,
Without stopping,
50 Until the Lord (O)looks down
And sees from heaven.
51 My eyes bring pain to my soul
Because of all the daughters of my city.
52 My enemies (P)without cause
Hunted me down (Q)like a bird;
53 They have silenced [c]me (R)in the pit
And have [d](S)placed a stone on me.
54 Waters flowed (T)over my head;
I said, “I am cut off!”
55 I (U)called on Your name, O Lord,
Out of the lowest pit.
56 You have (V)heard my voice,
“(W)Do not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief,
From my cry for help.”
57 You (X)drew near when I called on You;
You said, “(Y)Do not fear!”
58 O Lord, You (Z)have pleaded my soul’s cause;
You have (AA)redeemed my life.
Safe at Malta
28 When (A)they had been brought safely through, (B)then we found out that (C)the island was called [a]Malta. 2 (D)The [b]natives showed us extraordinary kindness; for because of the rain that had set in and because of the cold, they kindled a fire and (E)received us all. 3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out [c]because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand. 4 When (F)the [d]natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying to one another, “(G)Undoubtedly this man is a murderer, and though he has been saved from the sea, [e]justice has not allowed him to live.” 5 However (H)he shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 But they were expecting that he was about to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had waited a long time and had seen nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and (I)began to say that he was a god.
7 Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the leading man of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us courteously three days. 8 And it happened that the father of Publius was lying in bed afflicted with recurrent fever and dysentery; and Paul went in to see him and after he had (J)prayed, he (K)laid his hands on him and healed him. 9 After this had happened, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases were coming to him and getting cured. 10 They also honored us with many [f]marks of respect; and when we were setting sail, they [g]supplied us with [h]all we needed.
